Delicate Ink (Montgomery Ink #1) by Carrie Ann Ryan

Blurb:
On the wrong side of thirty, Austin Montgomery is ready to settle down. Unfortunately, his inked sleeves and scruffy beard isn’t the suave business appearance some women crave. Only finding a woman who can deal with his job, as a tattoo artist and owner of Montgomery Ink, his seven meddling siblings, and his own gruff attitude won’t be easy.
Finding a man is the last thing on Sierra Elder’s mind. A recent transplant to Denver, her focus is on opening her own boutique. Wanting to cover up scars that run deeper than her flesh, she finds in Austin a man that truly gets to her—in more ways than one.
Although wary, they embark on a slow, tempestuous burn of a relationship. When blasts from both their pasts intrude on their present, however, it will take more than a promise of what could be to keep them together.

My review:
Sexy contemporary romance.  Take a big bearded tattoo artist with lots of ink add in a big rowdy family plus a crazy ex then add in a woman with a past and scars inside and out.  Shake well and you have Delicate Ink .  This book does a fantastic job proving that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and everybody has a past of some sort.  Carrie Ann Ryan does a fantastic job at pointing this out without being judgmental.  I got a kick out of Austin and his family but I really liked Sierra.  Strength comes from within and of the two I think she was he stronger.  This looks to be a fantastic series with lots of fun family members yet to find their HEA’s.

You Don't Know Jack (Jack B. Smart, #1) by Adrianne Lee

Blurb:
JACQUELINE BOUVIÉR SMART has sworn off men and murder. But when she stumbles over a dead body and into the arms of her irresistible former lover, and then gets her best friend accused of murder, she has no choice. Jack B Smart pulls on her big girl stilettos and, with the unsolicited help of three gun packing old broads and one disgruntled ghost, sets out to find the real killer. But will the killer find her first?

My review:
This is a fun mystery with romantic elements.  This story will keep you guessing.  These fun characters will keep you turning pages trying to keep up with their funny attempts to solve a couple of murders, the identity of an author, and finding out if the night club owner’s husband is cheating on her.  Also there is a sexy cop, crazy old ladies, a gay BFF and the ghost of an ex-husband.  This is a total romp and I look forward to the next installment.

After Midnight: (Killer Instincts #4.5) by Elle Kennedy

Blurb:
Abby Sinclair was one of the deadliest assassins in the world before she became a mercenary. She likes her work—the missions, the adrenaline, the danger. But now she has a secret that could change everything. Especially since she and her husband, fellow operative Kane Woodland, have been thrust into an assignment that has put their lives in mortal danger. But as the secrets between Kane and Abby pile up, they begin to drift apart—until only a fatal twist in the mission can bring them back together….

After Midnight includes a preview of the next Killer Instincts novel, Midnight Action.

My review:
We met Abby & Kane in Midnight Rescue: (Killer Instincts #1).  We revisit them in this short when they are on a case in Cairo.  It is 3 years later and they have grown as a couple.   I don’t know how much to say without giving spoilers so I will just say that they are just as hot and with Jim Morgan and Noelle for comic relief this is a quick and intense read.  I also like that Ms. Kennedy tackled an issue I had questions about and gave satisfactory answers. I don’t recommend this as a standalone.  Read Midnight Rescue first.

Phoenix Rising (ROAR) by Cara Carnes

Blurb:
Sometimes you have to crumble to ashes before you can fly.

Riletta knew hardship. As a shifter who couldn’t shift, she was raised in a wolf pack that ostracized her. She was ready to tackle the world when she was dropped off at the university with no identity, very little cash, and the only thing she wanted—freedom. The last thing she expected was for the university’s resident Alpha wolf to stake a claim.

Macen Giordano hadn’t expected the little female to bring out his protective wolf, but he’s not about to let university politics harm the innocent shifter. Riles may not be wolf, but she is his.

When prejudices threaten them both and shed light on her true nature, the two must survive the impossible to earn their destiny.

My review:
Riletta tore my heart out.  I felt so bad for her.  First the hell that was her childhood then the mean girls and nasty Dean at college. How she keeps on finding the strength to keep on keeping on amazes me.  Phoenix Rising isn’t a long book but it packs a lot into those pages.  There were a lot of fun secondary characters that I hope get their own story sometime in the future.  This is a wonderful tale of triumph over adversity with a bit of sex thrown in for fun.

Red Hots by Yvette Hines

Blurb:
Masaun Hawkes is a driven man, a go-getter who has always enjoyed spicy/sweet candy and fiery women. Five years ago, his life was moving in the fast lane and he needed a change. Deciding to go into business with his younger brother, his life has become more manageable and stable. Co-owner of Decadent Treats by day and a full-time Dom and trainer at night, he should have everything he needs. Almost. Evenings at The Dollhouse dungeon have become emptier as he finds himself instructing new submissives, none his own. However, things are starting to look up when he delivers a special candy bouquet to the most captivating and tenacious woman. Masaun has never played second fiddle to anything in his life and he refuses to let Kindle put their relationship in that place-out of fear. Kindle Langston's life is anything but poetic. As the leading Assistant Commonwealth Attorney with too many high profile cases on her desk, she can't even manage the time to fantasize about letting it all go. Stress and free are not two words that go together in her book, but each trial is pushing her closer to the edge. The day a basketful of treats is delivered by the sexiest and most compelling man, "Dom Hawk," with a note commanding her into a clandestine world. And things begin to change. Is the life of a submissive what she has been craving? Can she risk allowing such decadent desires to be fulfilled? The risk seems too great to give in. For the first time in their lives can they both fully commit for love?

My review:
I met Yvette Hines at a reader con.  I had never heard of her before. She was incredibly giving of her time and insight.  When I received a copy of Red Hots I intended to go right home and read it.  Life and other commitments pushed it down my TBR.  I finally got to it and am so glad I did.
Red Hots is an incredibly sensuous erotic romance.  It tells of Kindle Langston, a smart, driven woman who gives everything to her job.  She needs balance in her life but seems unable to find it.  Her best friend is in a 24/7 D/s relationship so she isn’t unaware of the lifestyle but she really doesn’t get it until she meets Masaun Hawkes aka “Dom Hawk”.  He shows her that he can help her find a balance when she lets go and gives him control even if for just a little while.
I liked that Masaun has been where Kindle is now.  He too had the driven, high profile, successful career that brought him no joy.  Now he is still successful (maybe not making as much) but he has made changes in his life that make him much more at peace until of course he meets Kindle.  I’ve met more than one Kindle in my life and am so very glad that this Kindle found Masaun.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the cover.  I think it sad that the characters on the cover have absolutely no resemblance to the characters in the story.

Hillbilly Rockstar (Blacktop Cowboys #6) by Lorelei James

Blurb:

She’s protecting his body and guarding her heart...

Country music star Devin McClain understands there’s a downside to life in the public eye, but the laidback Wyoming cowboy has never imagined he’d attract crazed fans who would do anything to garner his attention. When veiled threats become real, he agrees to hire a discreet security detail. But Devin is shocked when that bodyguard is a hard-bodied woman. He’s even more stunned to be attracted to the steely-eyed stunner.

Former soldier Liberty Masterson’s return to civilian life has been wrought with challenges until she lands a job with a prestigious security firm. But when she agrees to provide personal protection during a cross-country tour, she doesn’t realize she has signed up to masquerade as the playboy star’s girlfriend. Though she’s more comfortable in combat boots than high heels, she has no choice but to appear to be the sexy groupie Devin prefers.

Living in close quarters causes the chemistry between them to ignite, and Devin realizes he wants to turn their charade of a romance into reality. Although Liberty surrenders to his every whim behind closed doors, she fears the sexy country star doesn’t see the real her; and Devin can’t help but worry when the tour ends that there might not be enough between them to build something that won’t fade away...

My review:
Hot country boy. Check. Kick ass heroine. Check.  Smoking HOT sex. Check.  All the things that make a Lorelei James book steam off the pages are in place.
Devin McClain is a rancher’s kid gone country music star.  He has worked hard to get where he is and he is enjoying most of the benefits.  That being said he is also a total ass to Liberty when he first meets her. Stardom has given him some security issues and his managers decide that bodyguard Liberty Masterson is the solution.   He doesn’t want a bodyguard and he takes it out on her. Liberty has her own issues but they don’t include putting up with Devin’s misogynistic crap.  Four months on the road in close quarters shows that Devin may not be the asshole he appears but that could be a bad thing too.  Because when he isn’t being an ass he is someone Liberty could fall for.
This can be read standalone even though there are appearances from characters from the other books. Actually Devin and Liberty appear in previous books just not the same ones.
