Southern Bred and Dead (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries #9) by Angie Fox

Blurb:

A haunted church. A ghastly death. Can Verity clear up the case before she’s buried way over her head?

Verity Long would really like a day off. Between uncovering the culprit who capped her gangster ghost housemate and dodging the bomb her boyfriend just dropped on their relationship, her spiritual calling has gotten complicated. But when she steps out for a little fun at a church fundraiser, she has another mystery on her hands when a family friend plunges from the bell tower.

With her pet skunk and a spectral mobster buddy in tow, Verity charges back into the world of furious phantoms. But as she follows a shocking trail of clues through a dangerous speakeasy, a possessed movie theatre, and a spooky mob safehouse, she could end up sleeping with the ghostly fishes.

Can Verity lay everything to rest before a mysterious murderer reads her last rites?

My review:

Southern Bred and Dead is the latest delightful entry in this series. Verity has her hands full solving several mysteries at once. Frankie needs Verity’s help confronting his killer. Verity needs to find out how her grandmothers friend died and what was so important about the photograph she had. And to top it all she needs to help Ellis deal with the dangers she faces in her line of work or lose him.  This is a brilliantly twisted tale of murder and intrigue. I absolutely loved it!

Enchant the Night by Amanda Ashley

Blurb:

In the arms of a centuries-old vampire, a woman awakens to newfound passion--and magical powers of her own.

Hungarian vampires are born, not made--and can breed with mortal females. Being one of the oldest of his kind, Quill Falconer has honed his skills at hunting just the right kind of prey, which is why his latest victim confounds him. She shouldn't remember his drinking her blood. And he shouldn't still be craving more . . .

Callie Hathaway's life is as normal as it can be after the death of the beloved grandmother who raised her. Until one night, feeling foggy and fatigued, she realizes that a strangely sensual encounter with a dark, handsome man didn't occur only in her imagination.

As Callie and Quill's unique connection draws them together, an ancient order of knights seeks Quill's destruction. Being together puts Callie in mortal danger--until she uncovers a magical family legacy. Side by side they'll fight for survival, and for each other, as the brotherhood of vampire hunters gather for one final showdown.

My review:

Enchant the Night is a bewitching tale of love between an ancient vampire and a newbie witch. This story took unexpected twists and turns that kept me flipping pages.

Squatch (Rolling Thunder MC Birmingham #4) by Candace Blevins

Blurb:

The men of the Rolling Thunder MC take care of their own, and that includes employees. When Kitty finds herself in a jam, she calls on Squatch for help — not because she thinks he’ll be able to help her more than the other bikers, but because she trusts him the most.

Squatch has always been partial to the little tiger shifter who dances like liquid sex onstage, yet is so bashful when she isn’t working, but the unspoken code is that the brothers don’t date their employees. However, while Squatch helps Kitty with her little problem, the two spend more time together than either anticipated, and sparks fly between the tiger and the wolf.

But Kitty has a history she didn’t share with the bikers when they hired her, and when her past catches up to her, she doesn’t trust even Squatch enough to ask for help. She thinks her only option is to run, but she doesn’t know wolves mate for life, and Squatch’s wolf has claimed her.

My review:

Kitty is an incredibly strong young woman. She’s escaped from a traumatic situation and is doing well for herself. She’s learned it isn’t weak to accept help but she understandably has trust issues. One of the few people she trusts is Squatch. Squatch’s wolf is intrigued by the tigress and their chemistry cannot be denied. This story will suck you in and keep you enthralled till the very end.

This is an emotionally tough book that may have triggers for victims of sexual abuse.

Once Wild (Wild Irish Universe) by Cara North

Blurb:

Parker Chadwick (the third) fled Boston on a football scholarship since his parents would only pay for him to attend an Ivy League school and he wanted to play at a state one. He felt good leaving his pretentious family, fake friends, and false life behind him. The 10 year class reunion wasn’t the reason he returned home, though. His mother’s illness, his father’s funeral, and a potential coaching job at the private school were life events all vying for his time and attention. He had to admit there was one person he was curious about. He made his way to Pat’s Pub and found more than one good memory in his favorite booth there. They had kept that promise, twenty-one, Pat's Pub. No one even knew he was in town that night.

Dixie Sweeting, better known as Sugar, wasn’t running from her past anymore. In fact, she was ready to walk into that class reunion and prove that even the wildest of children could grow up to be responsible adults. No one really understood her back then, but she had dealt with her demons. All of them, but one. The man who just slid into the booth seat across from her wearing a smile as big as Texas. She hadn’t seen him since her twenty-first birthday. This was their spot. Even though they couldn’t order drinks, they could order food and no one from their school would see them together. Then he left and he only returned once, when she turned twenty-one. He kept that promise and she kept hers. She was his little secret. He was her escape from reality. Some things never change, and some things do.

My review:

Though they are from different sides of the tracks Parker and Dixie find peace in each others arms. But can it ever be more? This book may only be 43 pages but the author packs one heck of a story into them.  I recommend this story your heart will thank you.

The Silence (Columbia River #2) by Kendra Elliot

Blurb:
A dead conspiracy theorist. A mass murderer. Two cases collide for Callahan and McLane in a pulse-pounding thriller by Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author Kendra Elliot.

A man is savagely murdered outside Portland, and Detective Mason Callahan finds blood-spatter evidence that tells a troubling story. Files reveal the murder victim, Reuben Braswell, was a radical conspiracist. In his home, investigators find pages of diatribes against law enforcement as well as ties to Mason’s fiancĂ©e, FBI special agent Ava McLane. The victim was her informant—and had strong reasons to be paranoid.

To Ava, Braswell’s rants were those of a wearying and harmless man…until they collide with her investigation into the murders of police officers and finding the connection becomes urgent. Meanwhile, Braswell’s brother and Ava’s twin sister both disappear, and disturbing acts of sabotage target Ava’s personal life.

For Mason and Ava, the brutal crimes and escalating mysteries create a perfect storm for a terrorist conspiracy that becomes dangerously personal—one that has yet to claim its last victim.

My review:
This breathtaking tale is filled with twists, turns and red herrings at such speed that will confuse thrill and leave you spent. The author writes such vivid characters you feel like you know them. This story sucked me in from the first line to the last.

Ink & Sigil (Ink & Sigil #1) by Kevin Hearne

Blurb:
New York Times bestselling author Kevin Hearne returns to the world of his beloved Iron Druid Chronicles in a spin-off series about an eccentric master of rare magic solving an uncanny mystery in Scotland.

Al MacBharrais is both blessed and cursed. He is blessed with an extraordinary white moustache, an appreciation for craft cocktails – and a most unique magical talent. He can cast spells with magically enchanted ink and he uses his gifts to protect our world from rogue minions of various pantheons, especially the Fae.

But he is also cursed. Anyone who hears his voice will begin to feel an inexplicable hatred for Al, so he can only communicate through the written word or speech apps. And his apprentices keep dying in peculiar freak accidents. As his personal life crumbles around him, he devotes his life to his work, all the while trying to crack the secret of his curse.

But when his latest apprentice, Gordie, turns up dead in his Glasgow flat, Al discovers evidence that Gordie was living a secret life of crime. Now Al is forced to play detective – while avoiding actual detectives who are wondering why death seems to always follow Al. Investigating his apprentice’s death will take him through Scotland’s magical underworld, and he’ll need the help of a mischievous hobgoblin if he’s to survive.

My review:
Ink & Sigil is the first in an amazing new series by Kevin Hearne. This story reads like a hardboiled detective novel with an older guy with life under his belt just trying to do his job despite lifes ups and downs. This fantasy is filled with magic, mayhem, humor and heartache. The cast of quirky characters brings humor to a heavy subject. This book is filled with magic from the gorgeous cover to the very last page. Fall into this story and you won’t want to leave.

The Assistant by John Tristan

Blurb:

Burned out ex-soldier Nick Kurosawa has drifted from job to job since he lost his family in a car crash. Lately, he’s been working on and off as a bouncer, barely managing to cover his bills; an opportunity for steady, well-paying work is just what he needs to get his life back in order.

Jacob Umber, a secretive philanthropist, gives him that opportunity. Umber has fibromyalgia and needs a personal assistant to help him with the tasks of daily living—someone strong, adaptable, and, most of all, willing to let Umber take the lead.

It seems a perfect opportunity for Nick. More than anything, he craves guidance and a purpose, and Umber gives him that in spades. When Nick starts craving more, it seems an impossible complication, but even the reserved Umber can’t deny Nick’s talent—and need—for following his orders. But Umber’s shadowy past holds secrets that could undo their fragile new relationship and any hope Nick has of a normal life.

My review:

This is a brilliant mind-bending tale. This story took unexpected twists that will leave you gasping. Nick is relatable while Jacob is an enigma. I’ve not read anything by this author before but you can bet I’ll be checking out his other work.

Lost and Found (Tactical Solutions International #3) by Maggie Clare

Blurb:

Dr. Lissa Morgan has had a crush on her best friend’s older brother since they were kids, but handsome, brooding Cam Taylor has never given her a second glance. When Cam unexpectedly shows up on Lissa’s doorstep bleeding and bruised, his personal life in shambles, things between them take a steamy turn.

After an incredible weekend with the sweet, sexy doctor, Cam realizes what he’s been missing. But he’s run from intimacy his whole life, sure he doesn’t deserve a woman like Lissa. He’s doing her a favor by walking away – or so he tells himself.

Frustrated and hurt by Cam’s distance, Lissa has no choice but to rely on his private security firm when an annoying admirer turns threatening. The more time Cam spends with Lissa, the faster his defenses crumble. When the disturbed stalker finally makes his move, Cam will do whatever it takes to save the woman who’s helped heal his wounded soul.

Lost and Found is the third book in the Tactical Solutions International series but can be read as a stand-alone.

My review:

Lost and Found is a marvelous addition to the Tactical Solutions International series. This book features the boss man at TSI, Cam Taylor. He starts out as a bit of a jerk but ends up a total softy. Dr. Lissa Morgan’s biggest flaw is her big heart and her ability to forgive Cam for being a jerk. This is all going on as Lissa is being harassed by a stalker. If you like redeemed alphaholes, smart women, action, intrigue and love this is the book and the series for you. Fast paced, energetic and engrossing.

SEAL on a Mission (SEALs of Coronado #7) by Paige Tyler

Blurb:

He’s used to the danger zone.

Navy SEAL Wes Marshall is used to nearly dying on a daily basis. But there are worse things than living life in the danger zone. Namely, the friend-zone hell where he currently resides. It was his own damn fault. Considering the woman of his dreams was going through her own personal hell of her father’s murder trial, Wes thought she needed a friend more than a boyfriend. However, as the trial languished on, so did Wes’s opportunity to ask her out. But now the trial is over and more questions are unanswered than before—questions that might get them both killed before they can go on their first date.

Not the friend zone.

Kyla Wells isn’t going to let the man who murdered her father go free. As an IT specialist capable of hacking into the CIA itself if need be, she’s hell-bent on finding out what the San Diego DA’s office couldn’t—or wouldn’t—why her father was murdered. Her best friend, drool-worthy Wes, isn’t going to approve of her investigating. Especially when the data she finds leads her into way more danger than a murder…dropping her into the middle of an international arms deal with the terrorists Wes’s SEAL Team has been trying to capture for months. She’s worked too hard on finding her father’s killer to die now. Besides, she’s going to tell Wes how she feels about him—right after they save the world.

My review:

SEAL on a Mission is an entertaining tale of romance and danger.  Wes has been half in love with Kyla for what feels like forever. Kyla is a hot mess. When these two finally get together it’s explosive.  Danger, intrigue and love; what more could you ask for? This is a fast paced tale that despite being part of a series stands well on its own.

From That Moment (Promise Me #2) by Carrie Ann Ryan

Blurb:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan continues her sexy new contemporary stand-alone series with an enemies-to-lovers office romance.

Paris Trissel is in a dating rut. Despite the pact she made with her friends to find someone to share her life with, she’s throwing in the towel after only a few blind dates. Add in the fact that the new hire at the job she used to love happens to be the Brady brother she can’t stand, and Paris is having a terrible year.

Prior Brady’s life seems pretty perfect from the outside. He has a wonderful, caring girlfriend, a family he’s never been closer to, and a new job he can’t wait to sink his teeth and talents into. Too bad the woman he has to work with for hours a day hates him on sight.

Once the two are forced to find the balance between chemistry and temptation, however, they’ll realize they’re stronger together than apart. Except when Paris’s past comes back with a vengeance, bringing terror, pain, and horror with it, both she and Prior will have to lean on each other.

In more ways than one.

My review:

Carrie Ann Ryan has created the perfect man. I kid you not. Prior Brady is sweet, sexy, funny and a modern man who knows how to treat a modern woman. I’m done. From the stunning cover to the very last page I fell for Prior right along with Paris. Read this book and find your new book boyfriend.

Avenging Victoria (Counterstrike #3) by Cara Carnes

Blurb:

Law and order is in her blood and she bleeds blue…

FBI Agent Victoria Blevins has devoted her career to upholding the law and never shies away from a challenge. When her latest assignment leaves her wounded, on the run, and alone in a foreign country while investigating a potential leak in the Diaz cartel task force, she puts her trust in one man who can keep her alive—even if he cuts corners and the law. He may not shade within the lines, but he’s dedicated and true…

Billionaire Milo Davenport walked away from his Delta team and founded Counterstrike to help domestic violence victims who needed help fighting people like his own brutal father. A caretaker of an elaborate underground network, he’s vowed to safeguard its existence from everyone, especially governmental authorities like the FBI. But when the one woman he wants most is in danger, he’ll do anything to protect her—even if she’s someone he has no business trusting.

Figuring out who betrayed her is simple. Navigating the secrets between them is a mission neither of them are prepared for but both will do anything to accomplish.

My review:

Victoria Blevins is a by the book FBI Agent. Getting involved with the shades of gray Billionaire Milo Davenport isn’t something she should do but gawd he is so smart, funny, charming and smoking hot. What’s a girl to do? When Tory is betrayed by someone she should be able to trust she reaches out to those she knows won’t betray her even if they operate in the gray. Watching Tory rationalize the rules versus reality is almost painful. It is sad to see her disillusioned. Watching Milo, Counterstrike and the folks at The Arsenal convince her the fight is worth fighting is uplifting. Tory and Milo will make your heart sing. This is a terrific read from the smoking hot cover to the very last page.

Hangovers and Holidays (Untouchable #5) by Heather Long

Blurb:

You know, I never imagined having one boyfriend much less four. Jake, Archie, Coop, and Ian are still my best friends. They’re also even more entrenched in my life than I ever imagined. They’ve been my rocks, but I’m not the only one with issues.

We’re fighting our way to a new normal. I’m in therapy. Ian and I are dating. Archie introduced me to his grandfather. Both Coop and Jake’s moms refer to me as their son’s girlfriend. I don’t know how much our parents know about our relationship, but I also don’t care.

Not anymore.

The holidays are here and we’re halfway through the year. Everyone wants a piece of us. We’ve survived so much. We’ve been trying to figure out who we can be amidst all the drama and sabotage surrounding us. Now we have to figure out who we can be period.

That starts with us.

It starts now.

*Please note this is a reverse harem and the author suggests you always read the forward in her books. Contains some bullying elements, mature situations, and is recommended for 17+. This is the fifth in a series and the story will continue through future books.

My review:

Hangovers and Holidays starts right where Whispers and Wishes left off. Thank goodness because that cliffhanger had me screaming. This was the least angsty episode to date. Frankie and her guys have the time of their lives. I was thrilled to be along for the ride. Sweet, sassy and sexy.

War of the Noses (A Nora Black Midlife Psychic Mystery Book 3) Renee George

Blurb:

My name is Nora Black. I’m turning fifty-two, but I don’t feel a day over thirty-nine. That is, when I can find my glasses, my feet don’t hurt, and my scent-induced psychic ability isn’t showing me crimes.

For my birthday, my best friends Gilly and Pippa signed us up for a weekend at the Central Midwest Spa Convention. Yay. Massages, fine dining, maid service, and best of all, as long as we attend a few workshops, the weekend is a tax write-off. It should be all sunshine and roses, right? Wrong.

My former intern at Belliza Beauty aka the Job Stealer, Carmen Carraway, is a featured presenter. Yuck. Throw in an ex-boyfriend, a number one fan, a brewing scandal, and a dead body, and my relaxing birthday weekend is DOA.

I’ll need all my senses, along with my friends, if I want to stop a killer from striking once again.

My review:

Nora and her friends are back and boy am I glad. Nora and her BFF’s head out of town for Nora’s birthday and a Spa Con. This story will have Nora and the gang interfering in another investigation until they solve it. This is an entertaining tale that had me smiling till my cheeks hurt.

The Soldier's Scoundrel (The Turner Series #1) by Cat Sebastian

Blurb:

A scoundrel who lives in the shadows

Jack Turner grew up in the darkness of London's slums, born into a life of crime and willing to do anything to keep his belly full and his siblings safe. Now he uses the tricks and schemes of the underworld to help those who need the kind of assistance only a scoundrel can provide. His distrust of the nobility runs deep and his services do not extend to the gorgeous high-born soldier who personifies everything Jack will never be.

A soldier untarnished by vice

After the chaos of war, Oliver Rivington craves the safe predictability of a gentleman's life-one that doesn't include sparring with a ne'er-do-well who flouts the law at every turn. But Jack tempts Oliver like no other man has before. Soon his yearning for the unapologetic criminal is only matched by Jack's pleasure in watching his genteel polish crumble every time they're together.

Two men only meant for each other

My review:

Two men from opposite sides of the tracks; one raised in comfort and one raised hungry both find in each other an illegal love. I loved the interplay between Oliver and Jack. I absolutely hate that their love had to be kept secret. I didn’t know how the author was going to keep them together. This was a fascinating tale of m/m love in old England. If you enjoy historical romance give this a shot. Does not disappoint.

Visible Panther Line (Paranormal Dating Agency Book 27) by Milly Taiden

Blurb:

***STANDALONE***

Sky Adler isn't looking for a man. She's happy being Gerri Wilder's newest assistant and excited she's on a mission to scope out a new client. She did not expect the town residents to treat her like she committed a crime and for the client to be hot enough to melt the ozone. She definitely needs a cold shower, but she's a professional, she can handle it. Maybe. Hopefully.

Damien Grimes isn't looking for a mate and has worked damn hard for the evil image he puts out. But when he meets Sky, that all changes. The very image of a playboy jerk is now what's keeping his mate from wanting to give him a chance. He needs a small miracle, urgently, if he ever wants to get her out of her clothes and into his bed. And he really really wants that.

It's hard for Sky to not judge Damien based on her research, but she's trying. Things are bumpy, but headed in the right direction when trouble comes calling and Sky needs saving. She has to allow Damien to be her hero and stop denying the love she knows she feels for him, or risk going home with her heart broken.

My review:

Don’t believe everything you read. Damien Grimes is vilified by the press. They say he’s a rich guy who gets what he wants. Sky Adler has had bad luck with men and isn’t going to fall for a pretty face and hot bod. When she’s sent by Paranormal Dating Agency guru Gerri Wilder to scope out Damien Sky should have known something was up. She certainly wasn’t prepared for the truth. I loved this steamy story. The hot guy had to work to impress the smart woman and boy was it worth it. Break out the ice cause this one will make you sweat.

In My Mate's Defense: Sassy Ever After (The Mate #2) by Cassidy K. O'Connor

Blurb:

Jaxson Connelly, a rare white cougar, grew up thinking he was a birth defect, unloved and unwanted. He thought his pack would accept him only if he had a pure shifter mate.

Attorney Sinead McAnarney, a human who specializes in shifter law knows all about mates but never expected to be one herself. One look at Jaxson and she knew he was hers. Now to convince him.

Sinead’s life is threatened when she becomes the focus of an obsessed client. Jaxson has to turn to his new pack to help him find his mate. Sometimes rescuing someone else has a way of rescuing yourself.

My review:

Your past defines who you were but doesn’t have to define who you’ll become. This is a lesson Attorney Sinead McAnarney has learned but it’s one that cougar shifter and veterinarian Jaxson Connelly needs to learn and Sinead is just the gal to teach him. Jaxson has things he can teach Sinead as well. This is a sweet and entertaining tale of life, love and family. I loved it.

Lilly's best pal Scarlett “Dixie” Jefferson has done it again! She’s convinced eccentric poodle-loving billionaire Archibald Lowry to sponsor a grand fundraiser for the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue. Tragically, it’s too late to rescue Lowry, who is murdered at the event. His pet poodle is now orphaned, so Dixie begs Lilly to foster the adorable pup. Of course, she already has a poodle—her beloved Aggie, named after Agatha Christie. Fortunately, Aggie seems to like the new addition to the family, whom Lilly renames Rex, after her second favorite mystery author, Rex Stout.

But she’s barely welcomed Rex into her home when there’s an attempted poodle-nabbing, foiled with Aggie’s help. As desperate characters try to get their hands on the canine cutie, Lilly turns to Dixie’s dog training class to help her sort through a litter of suspects. Ultimately, she may have to unleash Rex as bait to collar the killer . . .

My review:

Paw and Order is a delightful cozy mystery. Even though I hadn’t read the earlier installments I had no problems catching up with who was who. I’ll be checking out the books I’d missed and looking forward to future installments with Lilly and the gang.

The Love Scam (Danger #2) by MaryJanice Davidson

Blurb:

A sweet and sassy contemporary romance from New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson.

Rake Tarbell is in trouble. When the fabulously wealthy and carefree bachelor wakes up horribly hungover in Venice, it’s not something that would normally be a problem...except he has no idea how he got there from California. Or who stole his wallet. Or who emptied his bank account of millions. Or who in the world is Lillith, the charming little girl claiming to be his long lost daughter. For the first time in his life, Rake is on his own and throwing Benjamins around aren’t going to solve his problem. Now if only the gorgeous, fun, and free-spirited woman who brought Lillith into his life was willing to help the situation…

Claire Delaney finds Rake’s problems hilarious and is not in the least bit sorry of adding to them by bringing Lillith into the mix. A pretty Midwestern girl with a streak for mischief, Rake is not the kind of man Claire hangs around with. Even if he is drop-dead handsome and charming as all get-out. Even if he needs help and she has all the answers. But if this helps Lillith, she will go out of her way. And with a guy like Rake, she’s willing to bend her rules a bit for some fun. But when adventure-filled days turn to romantic nights as they search for answers, and someone starts following them through the streets of Venice, Claire realizes she's playing more than just a game. And maybe, just maybe, she isn't willing to let go of Rake or Lillith just yet.

My review:

Rake Tarbell is the fun twin. His brother Blake is the responsible one. It’s no surprise when Rake ends up hungover with no pants in Venice, Italy. But that is where the predictability ends in this romantic comedy. This story features an adorably intelligent little girl, a band of former foster girls doing the wrong things for the right reasons and nosy relatives.  This is a fast paced romp that is part of a trilogy and while it can be read standalone it is better if you’ve read the first book Danger, Sweetheart.
