A Trail of Lies (Jazz Ramsey #3) by Kylie Logan

Blurb:

A Trail of Lies is the third in the Jazz Ramsey mystery series from national bestselling author Kylie Logan.

Jazz Ramsey is just getting used to the idea that her on-again-off-again beau, Nick, might actually be a permanent fixture, when she gets an alarming call in the middle of the night from his mother, Kim: there’s a dead man in her backyard. Kim has a long history of drinking and a vivid imagination, so when Jazz’s human remains detection dog, Wally, finds no evidence of a body, Jazz thinks she can breathe easy.

But when the body of a middle-aged man, Dan Mansfield, is discovered in a nearby park, and a photo of Nick and his mom is found in his pocket, Jazz has to admit that something isn’t adding up. Kim claims not to know who Dan is, but the cops find out soon enough: he’s a recently paroled convict who served thirty years for murder. And when Jazz traces his crime back to a bar fight with an antiques dealer, she ends up with more questions than answers.

Meanwhile, no one wants her poking around—not Nick’s mom, nor the Motorcycle-riding ex-con she connects to Dan, nor Nick himself, who seems worried about Jazz’s safety, but also about what she might find. But Jazz has never been one to take no for an answer, and she won’t give up now—even if it means risking her own life.

My review:

Jazz is back and gets involved in a mystery that nobody wants her involved in. We find out more about Nick and his mother and their past as the victim has a picture of them in his pocket. Jazz has an insatiable curiosity and is as stubborn as her Airedale, Wally. This is a terrific mystery with enough twists to keep you guessing without overwhelming you.

The Nightshade Guild: Mage Crafted by Cherron Riser

Blurb:

Charlotte “Charlie” Nocker had always dreamed of working for the council. She just did not think the day would come before she had barely reached adulthood. However, once she had been summoned as one of twelve mages tasked to protect the Elven Princess Ameria, Charlie knew it was time to grow up and prove herself. Now she had to divide her time between her toddler charge and being one of the best crafters in the country.

Benjamin “B” Logan spent most of his nights working as a bouncer at the Smoking Cauldron, a popular bar and secrete mage hotspot. When his boss asks him to have an old artifact looked at, B is more than happy to take a few days away from the city, and the memories that came with it, to take it for repairs. However, he had no idea the importance of the artifact in question, and, in order to get it fixed, meant putting himself in a position to not only save his own hide but that of the young artificer and her toddler charge.

What started out as a normal job soon became a fight for survival. Neither of them expected others were looking for the artifact and were now in charge of the protection two precious possessions. With assassins coming from every angle, all Charlie and B know is the only way to survive and keep the Princess safe is to come together.

My review:

Baby Ameria is growing up and this month she is with Charlie a baker and artificer mage. Charlie is small in stature but strong in magic. She has been on her own and doing just fine. She didn’t expect the tenacity of her and Ameria’s shared enemies. Thankfully they gain the assistance of a half ogre who is handy with magical weaponry. I loved the magic of this tale and that Ameria has such strong female roll models. You can feel the love throughout the story.

Rath (The Omega Collective #2) by Mina Carter & Susan Hayes

Blurb:

He’s everything she knows to fear… but the alien warrior is her one chance to survive.

Injured, lost, and on her own, Savannah is at breaking point when help finally arrives. His name is Rath, and he’s one of the enemy… only he doesn’t act like it. He’s sexy, gentle, and his touch makes her ache for things she’s never wanted before...

He’s one of the beasts that conquered Earth - a dangerous alien in the service of a cruel and powerful Overseer. If he claims her, she’ll lose everything. So why does she yearn for his touch?

Catching his mate was the easy part… keeping her will be the fight of his life.

When Rath discovers a rare female hiding in the wastelands he knows he has to save her. She’s weak, wounded, and his… even if she doesn’t know it yet.

The law says he cannot claim her. His enemies want her for themselves. Rules won’t stop Rath from claiming his mate, and no enemy will survive if they try to take her from him.

This series contains hot, growly aliens on a mission to find their mates - and a group of women determined to free their planet... and themselves.

My review:

A strong woman omega is an alien concept to Rath. Savannah and her mother became omega’s when the aliens seeded earth with a compound that changed their very DNA. Omegas are submissive females for breeding. Their DNA may have been changed but they haven’t. The aliens are learning Earth girls aren’t easy. This is a sexy romp that will have you rooting for the home team.

All Fired Up (Ashes & Dust #1) by Jenn Burke

Blurb:

Once bitten. Twice burned. Forever bonded.

Don’t miss this riveting and romantic spin-off series from Jenn Burke, author of Not Dead Yet.

Paranormals are dying. All over the city, with no explanation and only one thing in common: their magic is missing.

Vampire and private investigator Evan Fournier isn’t supposed to be taking on paranormal cases, but when the murderer hits close to home, he agrees to look into it. The last thing he expects is to become a target himself—and then to become irrevocably bonded to the man who just tried to kill him.

With his memory gone and his soul bonded to a stranger, former firefighter Colin Zhang wants to be anywhere else. He doesn’t have a damn clue why he just tried to kill Evan, and he didn’t even know about magic until just now. The sooner he can get back to his real life, the better.

But every time either of them tries to leave, pure agony stops them short. Forced to work with Evan or suffer the consequences, Colin must excavate the secrets buried in his missing memories while battling two rising threats: the conspiracy behind the murder, and his mutual attraction to the bond mate he never wanted.

My review:

All Fired Up is a suspenseful paranormal romance. It’s also a spin-off which is very apparent in some of the interactions between characters. I hadn’t read the earlier books but all in all it didn’t hurt this story. Evan is a unique character and I really felt for him. The romance is definitely a slow build. I felt for Colin and when they agree to try I thought my heart would burst. I will go read the Not Dead Yet books because the characters were compelling and added to this story. A feel good escape.

The Devil I Don't Know (Brooklyn Kings #1) by L.K. Shaw

Blurb:

Jacob

My father is dying, and I’ve been called back to Brooklyn to take my place as the head of the Italian syndicate. After a seven year absence, my first test of loyalty is to marry the granddaughter of the Irish mob’s leader. I may not want a wife, but I’ll kill anyone who tries to harm her.

I only hope she doesn’t expect love in our marriage. I can’t—won’t—love her. Not ever. I don’t have it in me.

Brenna

My life has always been about duty. When my grandfather signs a marriage contract, I become a pawn in an alliance between the Irish and the Italians. Once again, I’m bound by duty.

I’ve always been invisible—the person who fades into the background—except soon my new husband begins to see me.

He’s a Brooklyn king, but will our enemies destroy my chance to become his queen?

My review:

The Devil I Don't Know is dark, gritty and violent. It’s also sweet and sexy. At 24 Brenna is given by her Irish mobster grandfather to the new leader of the Italian syndicate to seal an alliance. Neither Brenna nor Jacob had anything to say in the matter. Duty compels them. Can they make the best of it? Laughs, love, betrayals and murder. This book compelled me to keep reading. Terrific start to a new series.

Head to Head (Nerds vs Jocks #3) by Eli Easton & Tara Lain

Blurb:

If these two don't kill each other, they might fall in love.

Rand hates Jax because he’s the laid-back, vegan-eating, tree-hugging, total-Zen-until-I-get-a-chance-to-screw-you president of Sigma Mu Tau, the nerdy fraternity that’s the sworn enemy of Rand’s house, Alpha Lambda Alpha. What a phony!

Jax hates Rand for being the privileged, rich-heir-to-an-oil-empire, environment-destroying, soul-sucking president of the ALA jocks—but mostly because Rand hated him first. Rand has sent nothing but hateful vibes his way since the day they met. What a douche!

The enemies have never had a single conversation that didn’t involve shouting—until Jax’s old Buick breaks down on a road trip and Rand plays reluctant rescuer. Jax is forced to sit on Rand’s dead cow seats. Rand learns chickens can enter the living room and that Jax’s beliefs are more than skin-deep. The bitter rivals embark on a quest to save a family member and discover that sometimes animosity is a mask for crazy-hot attraction. With this much face time, head-to-head might become heart-to-heart.

HEAD TO HEAD is an enemies to lovers, forced proximity, opposites attract, searching for his sister, clashing cultures, MM romance—with a whole lot of fracking.

My review:

This series to date has shown us a spectrum of opposites falling for each other. Rand and Jax have been at each others throats throughout. Rand is the wealthy, attractive, smart and athletic leader of the ALA fraternity. Jax is smart, vegan, attractive in a hipster groove and the leader of the SMT fraternity house. When fate forces them together they have to talk and find that they aren’t all that different at all. This is a sweet love story that left my heart all squishy.

Undercover Wolf (STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team #2) by Paige Tyler

Blurb:

An unexpected partnership leads two wolves to reconsider everything they know...

Alpha werewolf Harley Grant isn't exactly comfortable with her inner wolf. Even though she's on a STAT Team where she can use her abilities because her teammates know about her, she refuses to do so, putting herself and sometimes them at risk.

Alpha werewolf Sawyer Bishop would give anything for his M16 Team to know about his inner wolf, but his teammates are mistrustful of anyone or anything with inhuman abilities. When he meets Harley on an overlapping case and realizes she's a fellow wolf, he's more than a little intrigued.

Now that STAT and MI6 have to team up to stop a crew of supernatural bad guys intent on causing a nuclear meltdown, Harley can no longer deny her wolf and Sawyer can no longer hide his. As they grow closer to resolving the case and grow closer to each other, they discover things aren't what they seem and revenge could cost them their lives.

My review:

Undercover Wolf is a fast paced procedural that takes us all over the world in search of human/supernaturals trafficking. This story delves into the nature of family and acceptance. Sawyer and Harley couldn’t be more perfect for each other. I loved this installment.  Even though this is part of a series each book can be read and enjoyed standalone.

Chosen by the Alien Dragon by Ava Hunter, Milly Taiden

Blurb:

Seph sees all types of weird things while working at a bar by Area 51. But when a bar fight turns into proof of aliens on earth, her world comes crashing down. Things take a turn for the scary when he kidnaps her. She fights, but he’s not letting her go. And while she’s confused and shocked, she’s not sure she wants him to.

Rulik says she’s his mate and she disagrees. He’s not human. He’s also a liar. So why can’t she stop fantasizing about him and her without clothes on. His attempts at romance are pretty bad, but with every gesture, her heart melts a little more for him.

While Rulik tries to make her see sense during their space travel, a real dilemma sets in. Will these two make a power couple in space? Or will their love be nothing more than cosmic dust?

My review:

Chosen by the Alien Dragon is filled with twists and turns and things you don’t see coming. Seph is kidnapped by an alien. I love that she lets him know that no matter how hot he is she is less than thrilled with him. I really liked Rulik. The 7 foot + alien dragon guy is a marshmallow when it comes to Seph. Watching them find each other and themselves was sweet.

Dungeon Master (Dungeons and Doms #1) by Golden Angel

Blurb:

Rule Zero: The Dungeon Master Makes the Rules.

The critical hit of divorce didn't stop their games. They kept scening together at the club and private parties for years after their split. But this no-strings-attached campaign isn't enough for Dungeon Master Gavin; he wants more than just a physical relationship with his ex-wife Leah. Unfortunately, he might already be too late. When he shows up to declare his intentions, Leah's on her way out the door for a date with someone else.

My review:

I loved this story. Gavin may be Dungeon Master in more ways than one (I want to befriend the puppy) but he’s got some groveling to do to win back his ex-wife. I liked that this story features older couples who still (gasp) have sex.

Fix You by Melanie Marchande

Blurb:

So, Mara, what do you do for a living?

I brush makeup on your grandpa’s face. I style your aunt’s hair just like in the pictures. I drive a hearse, and my workday usually starts after 9 PM.
I’m a freelance embalmer. A mortician. A stylist for the dead.
At this point in the conversation, most people make a polite excuse and back out of the room. I don’t blame them. People don’t like thinking about what happens after they die. And Nick Hamilton, the brother of my latest decedent, is no exception.
But he’s obsessed. Maybe because they were twins, although they didn’t particularly look alike. Nick saw footage of the accident online and it scarred him. He was fascinated that I was able to work my magic and make his brother whole again, which...hey, it’s my job. But this is different. Nick is different.
I thought I had my life in order. But this reckless, infuriating, fascinating man is changing everything. I wish I’d never met him.
I’m a great f*cking liar.

My review:

Fix You is a quirky tale of love and death. I loved Mara despite her job she isn’t morbid. Nick has issues but in the end he gets his head out of his butt and helps Mara.

I loved this look at a profession we don’t see every day.

Blurb:

Alex Kensington is a Tiger Shifter from the Island Stripe Pride. In Maccon City on business for his Neta, he runs into the one person he never expected to meet. His fated mate.

Margaret Flint is just trying to live her best life running her late father’s seaside motel down in the Jersey Shore town of Maccon City.  At twenty-nine years old, she never expected to wind up back at The Sunset Inn, raising her much younger sister, Joelle.

When unforeseen events cause her to be late with her mortgage payment, she learns someone else has bought the loan. Some New York City business tycoon who is trying to force her out! But Maggie will not give up without a fight.

Will Alex follow his instructions and toss the female out on her ear, or will he claim her as his own?

My review:

Hilarious meet cute leads to something much more. Alex is sent to rehab the Prides newest investment and meets his mate. This screws up his plans in the most delightful ways. Maggie has been working and studying her whole life and is about to succeed when life hits her again and she is tasked with caring for a half sister she doesn’t know.

This is an adorable romp that had me laughing out loud. Maggie makes Alex work for it.

My review:

Aria doesn’t fit in. She shouldn’t exist what with the enmity between merfolk and sirens but here she is. When she attempts to do something about it she is banished to dry land. Alone again. She’s made a way for herself but is lonely. A trip to Crimson Moon Hideaway has her finding her mate and more. She just needed to escape the Florida Keys. A successful writer, she has left her past behind her. That is until her best friend decides to get married.

Without warning, the old couple is thrust together during their friends wedding at Crimson Moon Hideaway but Shaw isn’t alone.

Sparks fly in this sizzling romantic romp as the past comes crashing in, reminding everyone that sometimes distance really does make the heart grow fonder.

My review:

I really enjoyed this second chance romance. Quade and Shaw were young and in love but wanted different things and they parted. Ten years later they meet again at a mutual friend’s wedding. Shaw regrets the way they parted and the way she has handled the distance she has put between friends, family and herself. This wedding is a way to reunite and forgive. I really liked Shaw and her family.  This story proves love really is lovelier the second time around.

Unfortunately, Cameron, who is falling for the one man who is certainly off limits, has a few challenges of her own. Normally, with the crew she has watching her back, she wouldn’t be worried. But the stakes are high, a missing file could expose her double-life and could devastate her team and endanger her family.

She has two choices … both of them have deadly consequences.

My review:

Transition of Power by Karen D. Bradley is a thrilling tale featuring a kick butt female lead. Cameron is smart, talented and determined to protect her brainiac cousin. This is a tale filled with twists and turns all intersecting at Cameron and informing her decisions. I enjoyed this. This is the first I’ve read by this author and think there are some situations in this story that occurred in another book but it doesn’t effect this story negatively.

Even if it means letting go of the only man who’s ever made her feel anything. But it all comes to a head when someone takes his mate. Zain will do anything to make sure Piper’s safe, even if it means killing one of his own.

My review:

I loved the heroine in this story. Piper Rain is a romance author that stopped believing in love. Her recent divorce has affected her ability to write. A vacation in the mountains provides her with the opportunity to rethink her choices and reset. She is smart and quirky and deserves the love of her hot landlord the local bear shifter alpha. I totally missed guessed the bad guy. This is a sweet and sexy tale of new beginnings.

JoJo (The Drummonds Book 8) by September North

Blurb:

Trigger Warning: These characters experience and must find a way to navigate PTSD from sexual assault.

Book 8 in the Drummond Series

Hi, I’m Faith. I have been half in love with JoJo Michaelson since moving here and seeing him in my neighborhood. He doesn’t see me, though. No one does. All of that is about to change because thanks to him losing a bet and me winning the dogfight, he has to take me out on a date. Only, JoJo isn’t like other guys. He...actually takes me out on a date. The problem is...lots of girls like JoJo. One of them...too much. How far will she go to get him? I just got friends, why do I have to choose between him and them?

I’m JoJo. I never get mad, I love to prank my team and my family, and I’m really good at playing basketball. I lost a bet with the team and learned that meant I would be taking out a girl from our school. I was really not happy about how that girl was chosen, but if I tried to shut that down before taking her out, it would look like I could not shoulder my consequences. I expected the worst, but...met Faith, and she is interesting, different. This whole time I thought I could avoid my family curse, but I knew by the end of that date when I walked her home after playing basketball in my driveway...she was it. I just...never saw the rest of it coming. Those girls...they did things. I knew they were bad news. I just didn’t think Faith would pick them over me or that they were capable of the monstrosities they committed, but...they did. Now, I have to learn to live with it, deal with it, and so does she. The question remains, will we be together when this storm passes or was the damage too great to repair between us?

My review:

This is a wonderful story. The author touches on some difficult subjects in a sensitive way but doesn’t shy away from the sad reality of those subjects and the work involved in coming out the other side. The characters are likeable enough that you want to see them succeed. I’ll admit to having shed some ugly tears for Jojo and Faith.

Accidentally Divine (Accidentals #20) by Dakota Cassidy

Blurb:

Heaven ain’t missin’ this angel…

At a fateful New Year’s Eve party, Georgina Maverick, a little bit drunk, a lot mired in guilt from her tortured past, trips and falls off a rooftop, tumbling ten stories to her almost death.

Little does George know, her friend and co-worker, Dexter Bridger, the man she discovers also happens to be her guardian angel, is on the case. He saves her from landing toe up in the mortuary, but he opens an entire can of worms when he nicks her shoulder and turns George into an angel, too.

With the help of the OOPS ladies and some divine intervention from Dex, George is learning how to be a guardian angel in the hope she can earn her permanent wings. But it ain’t easy when your newbie wings are strap-on (you read that right), and your angelic glow nearly fries the eyeballs right out of the head of your new cranky, vampire friend.

But worse? All the secrets that haunt both George and Dex are coming home to roost.

For instance, how did Dex become a guardian angel anyway, and why doesn’t he have his permanent wings after all this time? And for the love of all that’s good looking, why is he so stupid cute? How can a girl focus on getting it together with that kind of distraction?

Yet for George, the questions cut far deeper. Why is it so hard to overcome her brutal past and find the thing she’s always wanted—peace of mind and acceptance? And how the heck is she supposed to be someone’s guardian angel and guide them to emotional safety when her own life is such a wreck?

Worst of all? Who’s been lurking in the shadows trying to steal George’s wings? Because if someone gets their hands on her wings, guess what?

She loses her soul.

Forever…

My review:

Accidentally Divine is the delightful 20th addition to the series. This is a sweet story with a dark twist. The good guys are really good and the bad guys are totally evil. Then there’s Nina. I love how adorable George and Dex are. Sweet but not saccharine. Titus tickled my funny bone. This story is filled with moments that will make you say awww. Totally enjoyable.

Beauty and glamour meet deception and revenge in this electrifying novel by New York Times bestselling author Amanda Quick.

Investigative apprentice Lyra Brazier, the newest resident of Burning Cove, is unsettled when her boss suddenly goes on a health retreat at an exclusive spa and disappears without another word. Lyra knows something has happened to Raina Kirk, and she is the only one who can track her down. The health spa is known for its luxurious offerings and prestigious clientele, and the wealthy, socialite background Lyra desperately wanted to leave behind is perfect for this undercover job. The agency brings in a partner and bodyguard for her, but she doesn't get the suave, pistol-packing private eye she expected.

Simon Cage is a mild-mannered antiquarian book dealer with a quiet, academic air, and Lyra can't figure out why he was chosen as her partner. But it soon becomes clear when they arrive at the spa and pose as a couple: Simon has a unique gift that allows him to detect secrets, a skill that is crucial in finding Raina.

The unlikely duo falls down a rabbit hole of twisted rumors and missing socialites, discovering that the health spa is a façade for something far darker than they imagined. With a murderer in their midst, Raina isn't the only one in grave danger—Lyra is next.

My review:

The Lady Has a Past is a thrilling tale of secrets and murder. From the very first scene you are pulled into a story of mystery and misdirection. This story reunites us with Raina Kirk, Luther Pell and other characters from the previous books but this book can be read standalone. In this installment we meet Simon Cage a book dealer and more and Lyra Brazier a woman fighting societal norms and expectations. Lyra is smart, bright and gifted at making people feel special. Perfect skills for an investigator. I really enjoyed watching Simon and Lyra discover the bad guys, their motives and most of all each other.
