Cupcakes and Corpses (Pupcakes and Peril Book 2) by Paige Tyler

Blurb:

Pupcakes Bakery owner Tassie Drake is ready for life to return to normal––or as normal as possible, given just last month, she and her Chiweenie, Baxter, helped the hunky new town detective, Jack Sterling, solve a murder. But spring is in full bloom, and that means tourist season is too. Adding to the excitement, The Dessert Channel is filming their TV show Cupcake Combat in the park. And Tassie’s a firm believer that something sweet can fix just about anything. Except murder.
When one of the cupcake judges drops dead on set, all clues point to murder. But who had the most to gain from the YouTube foodie sensation being killed?

Everyone on stage that day is a suspect––two of whom are Tassie’s friends. While the last thing Tassie intended to do was get involved in another mystery, spending more time with Jack is icing on the cupcake, especially since their official first date keeps getting interrupted.

But as Tassie and Baxter discover, the dead woman made several enemies on her climb to the top, and someone took sweet revenge. Someone who isn’t afraid to kill again…

If you love smart likeable female sleuths, adorable sidekicks with four paws, and small towns full of quirky characters, you’ll adore reading about Tassie and Baxter’s adventures

My review:

Cupcakes and Corpses is an adorable cozy with a cast of lovable characters that includes a lie detecting dog. This installment involves the murder of a thoroughly disgusting human and Jack, Tassie and Baxter are determined to discover who murdered her and why.

A delightful romp.

A Proposal to Die For by Molly Harper

Blurb:

A fast-paced, witty, and delightful new mystery about a marriage proposal planner whose biggest job yet is threatened by a dead body (or two).

Jessamine Bricker loves a plan. Contingency plans and pros-and-cons lists are her love language, and because of that, her proposal planning business is thriving. But with rent costs rising at her office building, Jess jumps at the chance to plan a proposal between her snobby high school classmate, Diana, and her very wealthy boyfriend, Trenton Tillard…the Fourth.

Roped into joining Diana’s ”pre-bridal” retreat at the exclusive Golden Ash resort, Jess hopes to fade into the background, get some work done, and maybe find some time to unwind. Their first day is anything but relaxing: Diana is furious about the mountain spa’s lack of cell phone reception, the couple next door argues constantly, and Jess swears she just saw a drug deal go down. To top it all off, she’s warned to stay out of the woods by the gruff and sexy chef, Dean Osbourne. Is this a retreat or a horror movie?

As Jess tries to do her job while placating the bride-to-be and her increasingly over-the-top demands, she spends more and more time with the resort owners, finding herself much more in tune with the laid-back Osbourne family than her social climbing “boss.” Between a meditation garden-related drowning and Jess’s discovery of a body in a sauna, it's clear that deadly secrets abound at the Golden Ash. Now it’s up to Jess to unravel the mysteries here in the mountains—before all her plans are cancelled…permanently.

My review:

A fantastic new cozy from the hilarious Molly Harper. This book had me laughing, wincing, smiling and sighing. With a quirky cast of characters this story drags us into several mysteries and a murder or two. I thoroughly enjoyed this and highly recommend.

Oldrik & Ardon (Fated Dragon Daddies Book 4) by Pepper North

Blurb:

Skye has long dreamed of fanciful creatures. A bone-deep urge to capture the dragons she sees in her dreams has consumed her on the trek back to Wyvern. In a world turned topsy-turvy, could these magnificent beasts be important to someone many deem inconsequential?

As the eldest dragon in the horde of dragons protecting Wyvern, Oldrik has seen more than any other beast. The scent of a new mate has always been undeniable. One woman tantalizes him, but the full power of a potential mate bond is not there.

Ardon is a youngster compared to the longevity of the others. Confused by the allure of an artist he can’t pinpoint as his mate, he seeks the advice of the eldest. When they approach Skye together a passion unlike any other he’s experienced flames inside him. He hears Oldrik’s guttural reaction and realizes the same response has also ensnared him.

Change has come to Wyvern. A centuries-old pact between the founders and their powerful allies could save the inhabitants of the city once again, but only a dragon Daddy can truly guard his mate from harm. Or should that be dragon Daddies?

My review:

I love this series. In this installment blue dragon Oldrik and bronze dragon Ardon find their mate at the same time in the same person. Skye is special, a creative mind she is equally fascinated by the dragon shifters she has dreamed of. Their happiness is dulled only by the danger from an anti dragon coalition. An exciting addition to the series.

Of Spice and Men (Nora Black #10) by Renee George

Blurb:

My name is Nora Black. I’m fifty-six years old, and I’m having the midlife adventure of my life.

I’m all set for the ultimate winter escape: an adults-only cruise with my sweetheart Ezra, and my best friends Gilly and Pippa, along with their husbands. We are ready to hit the high seas for sun, fun, and definitely no crime-solving. The plan is simple... cocktails, sunsets, and endless laughter.

But you know what they say about the best-laid plans...

When one of our tablemates ends up face down in the hydrotherapy pool, It’s looking more and more likely his suspicious death will be declared an accidental drowning.

But my psychic nose says otherwise—this is murder.

Now, with the clock ticking before we reach foreign soil, I’ll have to use my aroma mojo to sniff out the truth. It looks like it’s up to us to unravel the mystery before the killer gets away with murder.

So much for smooth sailing!

My review:

Another fun adventure with Nora and the gang. Living out their love boat fantasy shouldn’t involve a dead body but it seems that trouble goes where Nora’s nose knows.  This raucous romp will keep you guessing and smiling.

Tell Me It's Murder Without Telling Me It's Murder (Accidental Detective Mystery #2) by Dakota Cassidy

Tell Me It's Murder Without Telling Me It's Murder (Accidental Detective Mystery #2) by Dakota Cassidy

Blurb:

Marty Flaherty here: Half human, half werewolf, aaall girl and proud of it.

First, let me say, we’re not exactly great at this detective gig. Sherlock Holmes wouldn’t be out of a job because we’re on the scene.

But while In the midst of trying to choose our next case to solve and learning from the mistakes we made with our last investigation, my fifteen-year-old daughter Hollis makes a plea we can’t turn our backs on.
Her best friend, Charmaine Ellis needs our help.

Charmaine's father’s been accused of murdering their house manager’s daughter. Ronald Ellis, guardian of everything werewolf, overseer of ancient were artifacts, is accused of killing Zinnia Hutchins.
A sweet, thoughtful young woman who grew up in the Ellis household—a young woman Ronald once considered a daughter.

The madness in all of this?

He fully admits he’s whodunnit!

That’s right, he makes no bones about the fact that he’s the killer. Loud and proud, Ronald confesses to killing a beautiful young woman. The catch? He can’t remember a single thing about the morning he allegedly murdered Zinnia.
Due to the archaic inefficiency of the were council police, and their deep desire to keep all matters werewolf deeply hidden from the human world, Ronald asks us to help him investigate what happened that morning, even if it means he truly did murder a woman he considered family.

So we jump in both feet and this time, with a hefty list of suspects on our side, but as we dig deeper we find secrets none of us expected, proving murder in the paranormal world is a tricky game of cat and mouse!

My review:

The tag line for the Accidental Detective Mystery Agency should be “whatever can go wrong probably will” and yet they never give up or surrender until they like the Canadian Mounties get their perpetrator. This installment had me laughing, wincing, thinking and praying but mostly admiring Marty, Wanda and Nina. A rocking mystery that will keep you guessing.

Dead Post Society (House-Flipper Mystery #7) by Diane Kelly

Blurb:

The seventh in the House-Flipper mystery series set in Nashville, TN, where the real estate market is to die for.

This year's honor roll is killer...

Carpenter Whitney Whitaker and her cousin Buck are no strangers to murder. After all, they’ve encountered corpses on their properties before. But this is the first time they’d decided to take a chance on a property where two suspicious deaths have already occurred. Most buildings on the former boarding school property will be repurposed for an upscale retirement community, but the developer has no use for the headmaster’s house given its violent history. The headmaster and his wife were killed there decades earlier, their deaths remaining unsolved to this day.

Still, it seems a shame to see the beautiful Victorian give way to decay or the wrecking ball, even if many claim the unsettled souls of the victims still wander its halls, seeking retribution and justice. Can Whitney and Buck exorcise the structure’s demons, solve the cold case, and give the building new life? Or will ghosts from the past seek to silence them forever?

My review:

Shades of high school English. This story is a course in high school horror. When Buck and Whitney take on the headmasters’ murder house Whitney can’t help but look into the cold case. This leads her into looking at the staff, the mean girl and bad boys from the adjacent former boarding school. Another fascinating mystery.

Her Cyborg Commander (The Drift: Haven Colony Book 9) by Susan Hayes

Blurb:

Coming to Haven colony should have marked the start of her new life, but the past isn’t done with her, yet.

River had negotiated the agreement that brought the survivors of Reamus Station to Haven. Back then, she’d dreamed it would be a sanctuary for her cyborg brethren, somewhere out of reach from those who had created and tormented them. She’d been wrong.
Now her home, her friends, and the future she worked so hard for are all in danger… because of her.

He’d vowed to protect every cyborg in Haven… but he’d take on the galaxy to keep her safe.

Edge doesn’t have any illusions about who or what he is–a weapon forged in the heat of battle and quenched in the blood of his kills.
As happy as he is for the rest of his brethren to settle into new lives, he can’t see himself doing the same. It’s enough for him to watch over them from a distance, especially when it comes to River. She’s beautiful, frustratingly stubborn, and far too good for him.

When an old enemy threatens their new home, these broken souls will have to decide which rules are worth breaking, and which chances are worth taking

My review:

River and Edge! Finally. Everyone knows they’re meant to be but them. Watching these two find their way to love is a nail-biting adventure you don’t want to miss.

Always a Fake Bridesmaid (Clover Lake #1) by Carrie Ann Ryan

Blurb:

The moment Ewan McBride entered my life, my world tilted on its axis.
When we part, I promise him I owe him anything for saving my daughter’s life.
What I didn’t expect?
Being his fake date to a wedding—in two days.
It was only supposed to be a favor, but we can’t deny the attraction.
Only he lives a state away and my life is in Colorado with my daughter and the Montgomerys.
This can only be one night that feels all too real.
Yet I know walking away will be the hardest thing I ever do.

My review:

Always a Fake Bridesmaid features a single mother and a cowboy out of his comfort zone. The attraction is immediate and worth acting out of character. I adored Livvy and Ewan in this fast-paced romp. A feel good story that will leave you with a happy heart.

With Love in Their Corner (The Boxers of Brook Street #1) by Sandra Sookoo

Blurb:

When you want something out of life, you’ll have to fight for it.

Lewis Stapleton, eighth Earl of Lethbridge is a man hovering on the edge of breaking. Between his mother pestering him about finding a bride of high social standing, maintaining his estates and title without enough funding, and worrying over his brothers, he requires an outlet. Anger and grief haven’t been dealt with since his father’s death two years prior, so he works through those emotions while in the boxing ring. His father was a prize fighter so matching his over-large footsteps is difficult, but something must give else he’ll explode.

Miss Cecilia Dawson is tired of being an object of ridicule or allegedly not good enough for anything beyond a quick tryst. With an affinity for numbers, she keeps the books for her father’s shipping company, but is desperate for a way to defend herself against the coarse and crude men she encounters in the office near the docks. The day she steps into the Stapleton Boxing Salon while disguised as a boy rapidly becomes both the best and worst day of her life.

Despite the instant attraction between them, Lewis ignores it in favor of teaching Cecilia how to box for protection. As the summer days slip by filled with an illegal fight or two as well as activities that come far too close to courtship, the attraction spills into forbidden desire that lands them both into scandal. Distracted, they never see danger coming that puts them into a corner of peril.

Only by releasing fears and working together will they come away with a prize more valuable than anything they could imagine.

My review:

With Love In Their Corner is an interesting Regency Romance that takes place in an unusual setting. Our heroine is a smart woman used to getting her way from a loving father. Our hero is an unhappy Earl being harassed by his mother to find a bride despite or because of the family’s tenuous financial condition. Cecilia and Lewis meet in a rather peculiar situation and the author takes us on a wonderful trip through their acquaintance. I thoroughly enjoyed their tale.

Single Dad Hockey Star (Walker Brothers at Willow Creek Ranch 1) by Rose Luv

Blurb:

To revive publicity for my hockey club, my manager stuck me with a sassy reporter, who has to write about me, the team captain, to try to revive my club’s fading fan base.

As pretty as she is, she is my enemy, as reporters have always made my son’s life difficult.

As a single dad, it is my job to protect him from anything and everything. Including this smart, little, nosy lady.

I am attracted to her determination and strong personality. She is very kind towards my son.

But, it is likely all a front, to get me sharing details of my life with her, so she can smear me over her magazine. Or is it?

Due to our forced proximity, I’m torn between, wanting to ask her out and knowing that the closer I get to her, the greater the risk of her articles bringing turmoil into my life.

I have to decide if I am willing to risk my public image or continue to keep her at a distance.

My review:

Dog Biscuits and Dead Bodies (Pupcakes and Peril Book 1) by Paige Tyler

Blurb:

Life couldn’t be better for Pupcakes Bakery owner Tassie Drake. (Well…life could always be better, but things were pretty doggone good.) Her sister was handling the mind-numbing paperwork of the bakery, and the long Maine winter was over, which meant more bakery business and more walks in the park with her Chiweenie, Baxter––when she wasn’t baking delectably cute doggy treats, that is.

However, discovering a dead body on the way to the park was not on Tassie’s to-do list. The fact he was the meanest get-off-my-lawn old man in town didn’t make it better. The fact Tassie’s best friend was being charged with the murder made it worse. And while the town’s new detective, Jack Sterling, might be very (incredibly, drop-dead––oops, bad choice of words) handsome, he had the wrong suspect.

It’s up to Tassie and Baxter to find the real killer––and there is a town full of suspects––before her friend takes the fall. But staying ahead of a cold-blooded murderer is no piece of pupcake…

Dog Biscuits and Dead Bodies is the first book in the Pupcakes and Peril cozy mystery series. If you love smart female sleuths, adorable sidekicks with four paws, and small towns full of quirky characters, you’ll adore reading about Tassie and Baxter’s adventures!

Includes recipes for homemade dog treats!

At Her Will (Mistresses of the Board Room 5) by Joey W. Hill

Blurb:

“I dreem [sic] of kneeling…for her.”

It’s a simple sentence carved on a school maintenance shed wall, but it’s a message a Domme can’t ignore. Especially when Vera meets the man who wrote it, and he’s nothing like any submissive she’s encountered before.

Rev is a janitor at a middle school, and possesses a singing voice that “calls the soul home” in his family’s church. He’s the most spiritually mature and intuitive person Vera has met, a man good at caring for others; the school kids, his church congregation, and his family. But the relationship he yearns for with a woman is a challenge to his family’s understanding, and their control over his life’s path.

While only a Mistress with a strong spiritual compass herself can help him reconcile the two, only he can bring her the love Vera feels like she’s waited two lifetimes to have.

My review:

At Her Will is an absolutely sublime novel dealing with the nature of love in all its iterations. The love between family and friends, man and woman and the Devine. Vera and Rev teach us that love is the great equalizer. This story beautifully details a loving and spiritual journey between two souls meant to be. This book left me amazed at the tapestry painted in words. This may be my favorite Joey W. Hill book yet. Stunning.

A CONNECTION TO STAY FOR?

When Dr. Trice moves to the far north of Iceland, she’s looking forward to immersing herself in her job and getting away from her painful past. She’s nervous, but her temporary colleague Dr. Drake Stevansson is happy to show her the ropes. Drake has the looks of a real-life Viking, and a way of making Trice feel safer than she ever has before. Their snow-melting desire is undeniable, but Drake is leaving. So what happens when stolen glances turn to fiery kisses that threaten to derail both of their plans?

My review:

An American in Iceland. Dr. Trice Shell is chasing her roots. She has no family in America but her DNA says her ancestors were from Iceland and surrounding areas so when the opportunity to fill in for a doctor in a small Icelandic town she jumps at the chance.

Dr. Drake Stevansson has put his dreams on hold for two years. If he is to finish his schooling to become surgeon he needs to head to London and get back to his training.

This is a story about dreams and how they evolve and grow. This is a story of family. But mostly this is truly a story about love.  I can’t say how much I enjoyed Trice and Drake find their dreams.

Death at the Ice Hotel (Wanderlust Mysteries Book 1) by Angie Fox & KC Bailey

Blurb:

Best friends, a crafty killer, and an ice-cold mystery…

When Leia Peterson discovers a forgotten box filled with childhood wishes, she knows exactly how to honor her late friend’s memory—by making one last wish come true. With her best friend, Kat, by her side (and their lucky tacky earrings for good measure), Leia trades her sensible Seattle life for a weekend at the Northern Magic Ice Festival, where a hotel carved entirely from ice promises the adventure of a lifetime.

But their whimsical winter getaway takes a sinister turn when the festival’s star—the legendary “Ice King”—vanishes during the signature sculpting competition. Between suspicious “accidents” and sabotaged sculptures, it’s clear someone’s determined to keep the remaining ice artists from claiming the prize.

Armed with nothing but their wits and their warmest winter boots, Kat and Leia find themselves tracking a killer through snowy landscapes and frozen corridors. Their suspect list is as slippery as ice, and each new clue leads them deeper into the hotel’s glittering maze. With the body count rising and time running out, these unlikely detectives are about to prove that best friends make the best crime-solving team.

My review:

First in a new mystery series this book features a warm friendship and an ice cold killer. I really enjoyed visiting a place I’ll never go as I am not a fan of the cold. I enjoyed learning about ice sculpting. I really enjoyed the interactions between two old friends and the clever way they discover who done it. I look forward to more adventures with Kat and Leia.

Blurb:

For this ex-marine and his K-9

Protecting this witness is a lethal second chance…

Protecting his ex-girlfriend wasn’t a challenge ex-marine Brett Madison expected when he became a South Beach Security K-9 operative. But Anita Reyes saw the killer’s face when she witnessed a murder. And staying only seconds ahead of the perpetrator has Brett and Anita following his determined dog Mango’s lead…and drawing all too close again. But with betrayal around every turn, survival may be the one chance Anita and Brett shouldn’t trust…

My review:

In this installment new SBS-K9 agent Brett Madison’s first assignment with his new K9 partner Mango turns out to be the woman he loved and ghosted. Anita Reyes witnessed a murder and now the murderer wants to erase his mistake. This is an action filled tale of second chances and redemption. I absolutely loved Brett and Anita but Mango stole my heart.
