Plain Jane and the Hitman's Wedding (Plain Jane Series book 5) by Tmonique Stephens

Blurb:

Bailey Monroe and Emmet Streeter request the pleasure of your company at their wedding.
Bullets, blood, and mayhem may occur.
Attend at your own risk.

He picked the ring. She picked the location. He picked the date. She said yes to the dress.
And then he left.
Bailey knew who and what she planned on marrying. A hitman. A killer. He promised this was his last job. One more hit to protect a friend and he was done. Their life together would begin.
Well, Bailey’s not having it. Emmet trained her not only to take care of herself, but to bring the pain. She’ll be damned if she sits on the sidelines while he strolls into danger alone.
She’s no one’s flunky, and if that’s how Emmet thinks their marriage will be…
She’s going to find her man and drag him to the altar, and no one—not his billionaire or mob boss besties, or her sociopath of a father—is going to stop her.
Come hell or high water, she'll get her happily ever after…or die trying.

My review:

This is a thrilling addition to the series. I love this series and this book is a prime example of why. Bailey and Emmet are passionate and perfect for each other. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat. This book is best enjoyed if you’ve read the earlier installments.

Kinn (The Omega Collective #3) by Mina Carter & Susan Hayes

Blurb:

She hates the alien warriors that conquered her world. All of them but one...

Serena lived by three rules - Survive. Fight back. Stay hidden.

But that was before. Before she was caught and brought to T’Kinn, the most arrogant, annoying alien she’s ever met…and the sexiest.

This alien isn’t just a warrior - he’s a healer, and a threat to every secret she has. He’s determined to discover what she is and he’ll use every tool at his disposal… including her own desires.

He thought she was the key to unlock the mysteries of these human females - but she is so much more.

Kinn’s orders were clear. Find out why the females of Earth are different. Serena’s arrival in his hall gives him the perfect opportunity to learn more - if only she’d stop fighting him. Fierce, determined, and beautiful, she’s a constant source of chaos in his well-ordered life.

But once he learns her secret, all bets are off, and he will do whatever it takes to claim her as his own. Even if keeping her was never meant to be.

This series contains hot, growly aliens on a mission to find their mates - and a group of women determined to free their planet... and themselves.

My review:

Escape with an alpha doctor healer alien from a warrior species that has conquered earth and the spunky earth woman who is determined to thwart him at every turn. Serena is part of a group of militant humans determined to be free. When she is wounded and captured she is taken to Kinn the best of the alien medical personnel to be healed and studied they discover that not all aliens are cruel and not all omegas are submissive.

I love these books because they are a fun and sexy escape but this story truly moved me.

Trusting the Badge (Arizona K9 #3) by Dorothy F. Shaw

Blurb:

For members of a police K9 Unit, partnership is everything—in work and in love.

LOVE AT FIRST NIGHT . . .

Shuttled between her alcoholic parents and foster homes that separated her from beloved younger brother, Steven, it’s no wonder Tish Beck is a woman with trust issues. To avoid getting hurt—or hurting someone else—she’s kept her romantic life commitment-free, and that’s fine by her. Until she meets exasperatingly hot, funny, smart-ass K9 officer Jeffrey Pearl, and stupidly spends the night with him . . .

Currently single and content, Jeff’s always got his canine bestie, Rio, by his side, and loads of human friends. He enjoys the occasional close encounter, but hasn’t been tempted into anything serious. Until Tish. He’s inexplicably head over heels. Too bad she’s determined to keep him at arm’s length. But when Tish’s brother winds up in jail—again—Jeff’s glad to be the man Tish turns to for help. And with Steven back on the scene, she’ll need it. Soon Tish will have to open her eyes—and her heart—to love, and realize where, and with whom, her safety truly lies . . .

My review:

This story grew on me the further I read into it. I ached for Trish dealing with her brothers addiction. It is so easy to get sucked under by a loved one with addiction issues. Jeff provided some much needed comedic relief.

Demons Are Forever: Magic and Mayhem Universe by Marianne Morea

Blurb:

What’s a demi-demon to do when the Queen of all Witches decides you’re her new it girl?

I’m Linzie Hellborne. A black leather wearing half-demon/half-witch neither side of my DNA wants to claim. I guess that makes me the perfect candidate for a covert mission to Bumfuck Bayou. An armpit in the middle of the swamp where nefarious activities have caught the attention of the Goddess. Or at least that’s what the queen of all witches, the Baba Yaga, AKA Carol, believes after she and her buddy Roy Bermangoggleshitz ambushed me at my BFF Tabitha’s wedding. My mission? Uncover the source of the shenanigans and report back. Tabitha warned dabbling with my dark side was dangerous. But I don’t know which is worse, heading to a swamp to trap an illegal blood ring, or that my cover requires that I wear pastels. Either way, I’m headed to Mosquitoville to catch a different kind of bloodsucker. Care to come along?

My review:

Daddy issues, mystery, magic, snark, questionable fashion choices and an old love fill this wonderful tale. I laughed and totally loved this story.

The Nightshade Guild: Mage of Misfortune by Linzi Baxter

Blurb:

Vacation request? Submitted.

Toddler books? Check.

When Luna Graves finally has the Elven Princess, she thinks she’s ready. Sure, her magic is still on the fritz and her boss is attempting to call her into work even though he approved her time off, but that’s beside the point. This is her time with the Princess and she intends to make the most of it.

Until Gabe tracks her down to her home and demands she come in no matter what.
There’s a murder on the loose targeting psychics and Luna is the only person he trusts. Luna knows she has to protect the princess so she finds a way to compromise, and quickly.

The last thing Gabe Rogan expects is Luna walking into work with a toddler on her hip and a cat with a crooked tail at her feet, but he’ll take what he can get. A third body has turned up in just as many days, and if he can’t put away the serial killer, the small town of Cassadaga is going to have his head. Just because he doesn’t believe in magic doesn’t mean others don’t.

With Luna’s hacker skills and Gabe’s no-nonsense approach, he thinks they’ll book the murderer by the end of the week. But as they dive deeper into the investigation, they realize there’s a deadly pattern with each murder that complicates things. The murderer questioned the psychics about a specific target every time, and when they were unable to provide information, they wound up dead.

Now, Gabe and Luna must figure out who this mysterious target is and why they’re with killing over.

They have to put their differences aside if they’re going to solve the crime and protect the Princess from outside forces before the murderer can attack again and this mysterious target is taken out for good.

My review:

An adorable elven princess, a mage with a chaotic gift and a hunky human cop all come together to protect the princess. Love blooms around the princess and Gabe and Luna finally admit their feelings for each other. Danger has a way of making the important things stand out. This story features a great cast of characters. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Grumpy Chef by Melanie Marchande

Blurb:

I need a job. Notorious celebrity chef Maxwell Dylan needs an employee who can put up with him. It’s a match made in Hell’s kitchen. Like...the actual kitchen, in actual Hell.

But I’m in no position to be picky, despite the fact that I’m still holding a grudge after he made me lose my last stable sous chef position. Turn up the heat, and tempers are bound to flare. But something else happens that I’m not prepared for.

There’s more to Chef than meets the eye. Verbal sparring soon gives way to a grudging mutual respect, and then...sparks. I can't afford to fall for a man like him. But my heart - and my hormones - aren't giving me much choice.

My review:

Grumpy Chef by Melanie Marchande is a delicious tale of love and growth. I learned a whole lot about the world of fine dining. Max and Jill are hot in and out of the kitchen. I loved that Jill was a strong female character and makes Max work for it.

Kali & Grayson (The "IT" Girls, #1) by Paige Tyler

Blurb:

Fortune and fame come with a price… But is it more than she’s willing to pay?

Kali Lang’s life couldn’t get much better. Her internet company Glossed & Glammed is practically an overnight sensation, and she is the “It” girl of makeup and fashion tutorials, with over two million followers. The flip side of that? She can’t go out in public without being mobbed by fans, and there’s no place except home where she can just be plain Kali. And that makes it hard to meet guys. When was the last time she had a date?

When a chance meeting literally has her falling into the arms of Grayson Hill—the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen—Kali realizes that while she might ‘have it all’, she’s still missing something very important in her life: Love. But what man wants to be called arm-candy and put up with the constant social media scrutiny that is Kali’s life? Unfortunately, not Grayson, and she can’t blame him. Even though they are quickly falling for each other, he’s not sure living life under the media’s microscope is something he can do.

Can a straight-laced lawyer and a trendy fashion influencer find a way to compromise, or is their love an epic fail?

My review:

The energy between Kali and Grayson is off the charts from the first moment they meet in this quick and sweet tale of fame and romance. Kali is a foster child made good with the help of her two college friends. She is strong, driven and has a heart of gold. Grayson is a smart and driven up and coming lawyer determined to make it on his own. They may come from the opposite sides of the tracks but these two are perfect for each other.

The Sassy Queen: Magic and Mayhem Universe (Chronicles of the Veil) by Julie Morgan

Blurb:

Mirror, Mirror on the wall who’s the sassiest Queen of all?

If you were to ask me a few months ago, it would not have been me. Now? I’m not as sure.

I’m in a world that exists beyond our veil, with Greyson, my fated mate, and found the family I never knew existed. All in a day’s work, right?

Wrong…

As the long-lost princess, I need to figure out where I belong in this world, and if this nutty world even wants me in it. While the pieces of the puzzle continue to click into place, I’ll discover who the villain truly is, and that my world isn’t the only one turned upside down.

Who knows? I might just get my own happily ever with Prince Perpyderpy and become the sassiest Queen of them all.

My review:

This book picks up right where The Sassy Goddess left off so if you haven’t read that STOP! If you have then get ready for a hilarious snarkfest as Cesha discovers her past and future. Of course her path is not without its bumps but faster than you can say Princess Buttercup Cesha and her friends work to lift the veil of darkness and snow and return the land to prosperity. This laugh out loud romp will leave you with a smile and a warm heart.

Claim to Flame (Paranormal Dating Agency) by Milly Taiden

Blurb:

Ashley has it all. But all she really wants is to be valued as a strong, powerful business woman. The problem is, her board of directors is full of crotchety old men that hate the idea of a single woman being their CEO. With the suggestion- forceful assistance -of her mother, she gets in touch with Gerri Wilder who’s supposed to fix her personal life. Good luck with that one.

Flare and Blaze run a competitive pharmaceutical company. But they need to find their mate in order to cement their leadership roles. When they meet firecracker Ashley, they know she’s the woman for them. She’s feisty, sweet and can handle two strong males all by herself. Not to mention her curvy body and beautiful smile are making it hard for them to concentrate on their job.

It’s not long until Ashley realizes Flare and Blaze are a bigger problem than her board of directors. They’re her direct competitors. If that’s not enough, someone’s out to get them and her out of the way. It’s a fight for love and survival. Will she find a way to balance romance and a career or will her life go up in smoke?

My review:

Claim to Flame is an exciting and sexy menage that will leave you smiling and exhausted. Ashley is a woman striving to make it in a mans world. She has to work twice as hard to be thought of as just as good. Grrr. The board is a bit old fashioned and won’t even consider her for CEO unless she’s married and settled down. Enter Gerri Wilder with two hot dragon shifters. Let the fun begin.

Like the others in this series this book can be read standalone. This world encourages you to extend belief into the happily ever after. Grab a cool beverage and enjoy.

Where did one go to find a mate, after all?

When her sister-in-law mentions the Crimson Moon Hideaway, Naomi jumps all in. A week-long retreat to a place where she doesn’t have to hide her leopard is perfect. She could think and relax without the watchful eyes of her pride.

When he meets the captivating snow leopard, Naomi, he changes his mind about dating. For the first time since losing his wife, he thinks about sharing his life with someone. With Naomi.

My review:

Single dad with two precocious daughters learning to use their witchly gifts and his gifted mother inlaw take a summer vacation getaway to Crimson Moon Hideaway. Snow leopard shifter Naomi is ready for a change. She wants to find her mate and start a family but won’t settle for less than the real thing. Well she might if his stalker doesn’t get her first.  This is a quick and satisfying tale of love and karma.

Chasing Sparx (Pride of Alphas #2) by Milly Taiden

Blurb:

Sparx Brady is sick of playing the same role. She’s been on the same soap opera since she was fourteen. She needs change and adventure. When the role of a lifetime comes around, she’s determined to be cast. She quits her job and heads to the mountains for a week-long survivalist course. She’s a stubborn Brady woman; she’s got this.

Tiger shifter Dash Jones doesn’t talk. He can, but he prefers quiet contemplation on his mountain. The only time he interacts is when he’s teaching a survivalist course. It’s a fun, easy enough gig. But when a shiny actress in heels drives up to his mountain, he tries to chase the chatty woman away. He doesn’t want a mate. Especially not her.

But Sparx is determined and strong. Her energy knows no bounds, and soon, the grumpy tiger is smitten by the actress. If only he can find a way to keep her from completing the grueling final test… and from the dangerous bears on the other side of the mountain. Falling in love definitely isn’t the only kind of fall in this mountain adventure.

My review:

The actress and the mountain man. I loved Sparx. She is strong, determined and not going to let anybody tell her what she can’t do. Not even the hunky tiger shifter who is supposed to teach her how to survive in the wilderness. Dash is a grumpy loner who likes the quiet on his mountain. He doesn’t need a mate who will leave him for the bright lights of the big city. This is an engaging tale of love and determination. Though this is part of a trilogy it can be read standalone with no loss.

Vampire Guardian (Vampire Queen #17) by Joey W. Hill

Blurb:

Fae and vampires never fall in love. Except when they do.

Adan has come to Club Atlantis to do a job. The BDSM club is to become part of the portal network for magic users. A born vampire with the blood of a Cherokee shaman and an Irish Seer, Adan is apprenticed to a Light Guardian helping him hone his skills to become a full sorcerer. Perhaps even a Guardian himself one day.

But Club Atlantis is a haven for a Fae female, an unwelcome distraction. His hatred for her kind means even her scent can set off his bloodlust.

Catriona is a Fae unsettled in her own world, and physiologically unable to be in the human one without extraordinary protections in place. She can’t put down roots anywhere. For a tree nymph, that’s a serious problem. One that calls for a solution that will appall the Fae world.

History says a vampire and a Fae who fall in love are destined for tragedy. But love has a way of refusing to be ignored. No matter the consequences…

My review:

This book is sublime. This story is filled with pain, loss, anger, sex, politics, power, humor and most of all love. Adan and Catriona are young for their given species and yet they’ve developed a deep soul binding love for each other.  They need to overcome prejudices and pain from their respective pasts, and laws and strictures put in place by their respective Queens.

The author knows that true love is the greatest power and shows us that in this terrific tale. This story is part of a series but can be read standalone just fine. Grab a glass of wine, a comfy seat and get lost in this riveting story.

Beyond (The Founding of Valdemar #1) by Mercedes Lackey

Blurb:

The long-awaited founding of Valdemar comes to life in this new series from a New York Times bestselling author and beloved fantasist.

Within the Eastern Empire, Duke Kordas Valdemar rules a tiny, bucolic Duchy that focuses mostly on horse breeding. Anticipating the day when the Empire’s exploitative and militant leaders would not be content to leave them alone, Korda’s father set out to gather magicians in the hopes of one day finding a way to escape and protect the people of the Duchy from tyranny.

Kordas has lived his life looking over his shoulder. The signs in the Empire are increasingly dire. Under the direction of the Emperor, mages have begun to harness the power of dark magics, including blood magic, the powers of the Abyssal Planes, and the binding and "milking" of Elemental creatures.

But then one of the Duchy’s mages has a breakthrough. There is a way to place a Gate at a distance so far from the Empire that it is unlikely the Emperor can find or follow them as they evacuate everyone that is willing to leave.

But time is running out, and Kordas has been summoned to the Emperor's Court.

Can his reputation as a country bumpkin and his acting skills buy him and his people the time they need to flee? Or will the Emperor lose patience, invade to strip Valdemar of everything of worth, and send its conscripted people into the front lines of the Imperial wars?

My review:

Mercedes Lackey has done it again! This book sucked me in with engaging characters and political drama. This book is a little darker than the other Valdemar books but that could be because Kordas and his people were living under the emperors thumb. This is a tale of new beginnings and tough decisions. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” could be the theme of this book. I can’t wait for the next installment.

The Accidental Gatekeeper (The Accidental Midlife Trilogy, #1) by Carla Rehse

Blurb:

It's bad enough that Everly's drug-selling husband is in jail and her adult daughter blames her for the situation. But now the FBI wants her to turn witness, while her husband's criminal friends want to keep her permanently silent. With no other safe haven, Everly returns to her hometown. A place she hasn't visited in twenty-seven years. And didn't leave under the best of circumstances.

It’s not that Everly has a problem with her hometown, exactly, but since it sits next to Hell’s Gate, there's bound to be a few issues. Like the archaic rules set by the angels who run the town. Or the fact that the townsfolk feel Everly abandoned her duties as one of the members of the town's founding families. But between celestial politics or getting gunned down by a drug cartel, Everly decides to chance finding sanctuary back home.

After a little good-versus-evil stunt at the town's border, Everly is let back in and things are great... for the first five minutes. Then Everly gets bitten by a hellhound, faints in front of her hot-and-single old high school boyfriend, and accidentally becomes the town’s Gatekeeper to Hell. A job she never wanted, isn't trained for, and can't shake off like gum stuck to her shoe. And as much as she's flipping out, the celestial ruling body aren't too pleased about it either.

Before Everly can take a deep breath and figure a way out of this mess, an angel gets killed, humans go missing and the town shuts its magical borders. Now Everly is trapped inside with dying angels, rampaging demons, and a witch with a murderous agenda. Plus, an archangel and his army surround the city and are itching to contain the town's problems with a heaven-sent big boom. The only way out is for Everly to learn how to use her newly acquired Gatekeeper powers. But with no handbook provided, there's a snowball's chance in hell she'll figure it out in time.

My review:

Life has decided to dump on Everly. Her body is betraying her as she enters her forties. She’s turned in her money laundering husband to the Feds and the cartel goons are not happy with her neither is her only daughter. So she is heading home to mama and the place she ran from when she hit 18. That’s when things get really interesting. This is an action packed romp filled with humor and magic and all kinds of heck breaking loose. This is the first in a trilogy by a new to me author and I look forward to seeing where she takes us.

Her Dragon Savior (Awaken the Dragon Book 1) by Milly Taiden & Ava Hunter

Blurb:

Dragon-shifter Evair awakens to an attack and is wounded as he defends himself. He’s drawn to a beautiful but strong-willed witch who helps him control his power and shifting abilities. But he’s much more interested in finding out how to make her his. And once he gets a taste of her, he knows he’s never letting her go.

Penelope can’t believe the gorgeous dragon needs her. She’s happy to teach him about the new world and help him figure out why he was woken. Love and romance weren’t in the cards. She tries to fight it, but their bond is stronger than she realized. Are they mates? Could he be right? His flaming kisses and warm caresses make her hope he is.

A group of poachers is hunting down Evair’s kind. It’s a race against time to get to them before they kill more of his people. Love blooms in the midst of their battles. Their love will either survive or die crushed in their war for survival.

My review:

Her Dragon Savior is an exciting new PNR that will leave you breathless. Evair is an old dragon awakened from an over 200 year nap by dragon hunters. He is saved and healed by Penelope a human witch who takes perverse pleasure in Evair’s lack of knowledge of current events and pop culture. They go on an adventure worthy of Tomb Raider to save another dragon from the hunters. This is an enjoyable romp with some seriously sweet characters.

A Haunting Midlife (Witching After Forty #3) by Lia Davis & L.A. Boruff

A Haunting Midlife (Witching After Forty #3) by Lia Davis & L.A. Boruff

Blurb:

Ava Harper may be a raiser of the dead and a not-so-famous author, but she isn’t vampire hunter. Not even close.

With the decision made to stay in Shipton Harbor, she returns to the home she shared with her deceased husband in Pennsylvania to put it on the market. But saying goodbye to the memories of the home they raised their son in is a lot harder than it had sounded in her head.

In the months she’s been in Shipton, new neighbors moved in across the street from her Philly home. Now, Ava has nothing against vampires. But when people in the neighborhood start turning up dead, she can’t help but to check into the newbies in the hood.

Since she doesn’t know enough about law enforcement red tape, she calls her best friend to come and help. However, Sam is working a case with a neighboring town and Sheriff Drew takes it upon himself to show up at her door instead.

And now, as if dealing with how the sheriff makes her knees weak isn’t bad enough, her house is haunted.

Just another day in Ava’s life at this point.

My review:

First off, I LOVE this cover! Ava’s life is filled with one paranormal mishap after another. In this story Ava and her son are going to pack up their former home in Philly and hopefully finally get closure. But like everything in Ava’s life things don’t go exactly as planned yet everything turns out for the best. This delightful paranormal romp made me smile and left me wanting more.

A rebound isn’t supposed to last. Though, sometimes, fate has other ideas in this opposites attract, friends with benefits romance.

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

First up: Pacey Ziglar.

My review:

Pacey is a flirt. Pacey is a nice guy. Pacey is sexy as sin. Pacey was supposed to help Mackenzie get over the betrayal by her ex. But as they get to know one another they grow ever closer and their rebound relationship becomes so much more. This is a sweet feel good story with undercurrents of academic misogyny.
