The Innkeeper Chronicles Volume 1 (Innkeeper Chronicles #1-3) by Ilona Andrews

Dust jacket and interior illustrations by Doris Mantair.

Subterranean Press is pleased to present, from NYT #1 bestselling author Ilona Andrews, an omnibus of the first three novels in the Innkeeper series. Our edition will be huge (over 760 pages), with an original full-color wraparound dust jacket, as well as full-color and black-and-white interior illustrations by Doris Mantair.
Blurb:
Meet Dina Demille, a nice Texas gal who runs a seemingly ordinary, quaint B&B.  But Dina’s inn is a magic, thinking entity; her fluffy Shih-tzu, Beast really is a beast; and her guests are the kind that no one on earth is supposed to know about:  guests like a dethroned galactic tyrant with a massive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced—and superhot—alpha-strain werewolf.

So don’t expect a normal stay…and don’t stand too close, or you may be collateral damage….

In Clean Sweep, Dina—with the unwanted assistance of newcomer (and alpha werewolf) Sean Evans and Arland, a cosmic vampire soldier—takes on an extraterrestrial killing machine that could destroy her Inn, her neighbors, and everything she holds dear.

Sweep in Peace, finds Dina hosting an anything-but peace summit between three warring intergalactic species; Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char.

One Fell Sweep sends Dina to the galaxy’s worst penal colony to rescue her sister; and back home to fend off a clan of assassins in pursuit, all while saving a guest’s civilization from annihilation…and searching for her missing parents.

My review:
The Innkeeper Chronicles Volume 1 contains three fantastic tales and some incredible artwork. It goes to show why I think that the Ilona Andrews team is among the best at world building, When reading an Ilona Andrews book I am swept into a fully functioning world and can see and feel things as they happen to our heroine the Innkeeper Dina Demille. Dina is totally relatable. Not perfect but she tries hard. I love the fact that these stories are female positive.
Clean Sweep – The first rule of Innkeeping is don’t let the normal know what is going on. An extraterrestrial visitor is determined to test Dina’s boundries. With the help of her new neighbor alpha-strain werewolf Sean Evans and Arland, a cosmic vampire soldier Dina is more than up to the challenge.
Sweep in Peace – Dina hosts intergalactic peace talks that are anything but peaceful.  This tests her abilities as Innkeeper but she is more than up to the task and then end results will more than make up for the inconvenience. I loved revisiting with some of the characters from The Edge.  George, Jack and Lark were exactly how I envisioned them.
One Fell Sweep – This story was the best of them all. It goes into what it really means to be an Innkeeper and has the added benefit of bring all our favorite characters back together and introducing us to a few more.

This is more than a book it is a work of art.

Physical Forces (K-9 Rescue #6) by D.D. Ayres

Blurb:
LOVE TO THE RESCUE
Macayla Burkett is no ordinary private eye. She’s a pet detective, dedicated to tracking down missing dogs and cats. When two famous racing greyhounds disappear and turn up dead, Macayla finds herself in the midst of a much more serious case. And when the thieves target her and threaten her life, she realizes she’s in grave danger—until a ridiculously handsome stranger enters the picture …
Oliver Kelly may look like a male stripper, but his muscles aren’t just for show. The gorgeous Australian is co-owner of a K-9 Search and Rescue service dedicated to saving those in danger. When he and his K-9 partner, an Australian shepherd named Jackeroo, rescue the fiery detective from trouble, the sparks begin to fly. And when they join forces to stop a widespread case of animal theft, it unleashes a torrent of passion that’s impossible to tame…

My review:

Physical Forces is an outstanding addition to this series! Pet detective Macayla Burkett and BARKS co-owner Oliver Kelly have the best meet cute I’ve read in a while. Oliver hasn’t let his disability slow him down from anything he has wanted to do except maybe getting close to a woman outside of the bedroom. Macayla is starting over. She has a new life in a new town and just wants to earn enough to keep a roof over her head, food in her belly and to forget. But trouble seems to find her and the sexy Aussie and his incredible K9 are determined to help. Watching Mac and Oliver learn to love each other is well worth the read.

Then Came Wanda...With A Baby Carriage (Accidentals #15) by Dakota Cassidy

Blurb:

There’s almost nothing Wanda Jefferson wants more than a family to call her own, and she’s almost got it all with her husband Heath, a beautiful home in the suburbs, and her soul-satisfying work with her best friends as part of OOPS—a paranormal crisis hotline.
Yet still, there’s a tiny hole in Wanda’s heart she longs to fill with a baby. As she and Heath explore adoption, and finally bring home a beautiful baby boy with the support of their friends and family, everything that can go wrong, does.
First, no one, not even Nina the baby-loving vampire, can soothe the cranky infant. He’s cries constantly, bringing Wanda’s insecurities as a new mother out in full force. Then banshee, Sal Brice and sexy skinwalker, Grey Hamlin show up, and yikes, do they have a tale to tell—one that involves a diabolical plan that threatens Wanda’s newly formed family!
You know what that means, right? Hell hath no fury like the OOPS women on a case!

My review:

This addition to the Accidentals series has more aww than haha but is still a wonderful read. Wanda and Heath have adopted a little boy and the gang is thrilled for them. But it is going to take an outsider to tell them why the sweet little boy won’t stop crying. But by doing so she has put them all in danger. The OOPS family surrounds the wagons and even adopts a few new members. This story reminds us that there is the family you are born into and then there is the family you choose. I loved that even Wanda the sweetest most put together member of the team has moments of insecurity too. I adored this sweet read and revisiting the OOPS gang.

Sassy Ever After: The Sweetest Sass by Alyse Zaftig

Blurb:

My bakery is struck by lightning.
Firefighters show up to fight the blaze during the thunderstorm. Two of them wrap me up in a blanket, give me coffee, and take me home.
We agree to meet the next day.
And the next.
And the...you get the picture. Not surprising when I figure out I'm pregnant.
But they have a secret that they haven't told me. I'm a boring old human.
They're not.

My review:

Raven meets two wolf shifter firefighters on what is one of the worst days of her life. Who knew it was the start of the rest of her life. Orion and Quinton have known they would share a mate. They just never figured their mate would be human. I liked the story well enough but it really didn’t do anything for me. Maybe it was all the interruptions. If you want a quick sexy read give it a try.

Blurb:

That's where Robert comes in.

Daniel has the money, Robert has the name, and both of them know they can help each other out. But their marriage of convenience has the potential to become a real love match--unless a threat to Daniel's business ruins everything.

My review:
m/m
Noble Intentions by Andrew Grey is a sweet arranged marriage / matchmaker romance. Barrister Robert Morton (now Earl of Hantford) and American tech wizard Daniel Fabian are more alike than different. They are both consumed by their work. Their love lives are practically nonexistent. But their reasons for getting together couldn’t be more different. Robert wants to protect the past and Daniel wants to overcome it. Regardless of how they came together watching them grow together was worth the read.

Tracking You (Redwood Ridge #2) by Kelly Moran

Blurb:
Love isn't always loud. Sometimes it's silent.

Gabby Cosette has always been dubbed the good girl of quaint Redwood Ridge, Oregon, and being permanently put in the friend zone has left her dating life stagnant. With no prospects in sight, she clings to her friends and resolves to not let loneliness drag her under. So when the town Battleaxes set their matchmaking sights on her, she figures it can't hurt. Yet the guy they think is perfect for her just happens to be not only her boss at the veterinarian clinic, but her best friend. Sure, Flynn O'Grady is attractive and the nicest guy around, but going there with him would topple both of their carefully constructed worlds and there would be no going back. Even if he is starting to make her girly parts zing.

Having been born deaf, Flynn has already felt like an outsider most of his life. Aside from his brothers, Gabby is about the only person who's gone out of her way to treat him as more than a handicap. Which is exactly why he's banked his secret attraction for his sweet, beautiful vet tech. Except his meddling family is trying to play Cupid and ruin the best thing to ever happen to him. Without Gabby, his work as a veterinarian, never mind his personal life, wouldn't flow. Determined to ignore the antics, he's secure in the knowledge she's not interested in him romantically. But then a kiss changes everything . . . and he's wondering if taking the ultimate shot at love might be worth the risk.

My review:
Get lost in this fabulous small town romance. Gabby and Flynn have been friends since kindergarten. Gabby insisted on learning sign language so she could talk to her new friend. Gabby has a heart of gold. She is everybody’s buddy and nobody’s everything. She is coming up on her thirtieth birthday and wants someone bad enough to let the town Battleaxes (aka matchmakers and busybodies) set her up on a blind date. When that date turns out to be her best friend Flynn things start to get strange. This best friends to lovers tale will make your heart sing and renew your faith in love.

On edge, he’s not ready to deal with Jane Harmon, a woman who arouses in him an inexplicable need to protect.

Being around him terrifies her, but worse, it awakens a wild passion which rages out of control.

My review:
Smoke & Marines is a short sweet tale of love and recovery. Former Marine Combat Firefighter Casey is suffering from survivors guilt and Generals daughter Jane Harmon is recovering from severe burns. Neither are who they were before but together they may become something special. I love that these two incredibly strong individuals don’t think they are all that strong, but to come through what they have and to find love on the other side is incredible. A fantastic read.

Red Wolf (Shifters Unbound #10) by Jennifer Ashley

Blurb:

The New York Times bestselling author of Guardian’s Mate returns to the world of the Shifters and a tale of a new love under fire...

Lupine Shifter Dimitri has always had to defend himself to other Shifters. As a red wolf, he’s not considered a “pure” wolf, and the battles have honed him into a tough fighter, a champion of the fight clubs. Jaycee loves that idea, but she knows that a mate bond can’t be forced. And when Dimitri and Jaycee are called on to go undercover to protect collared Shifters, she knows the dangers ahead will make or break their future together.

My review:

When a strong woman gives her heart it is a gift unlike any other. Red Wolf Shifter Dimitri has known since the day he met her that leopard Shifter Jaycee was the one for him. But they had to grow up and live a little before he can make his claim. That time is now. And he is going to have to do it while on a job for their alpha and all kinds of other challenges. A terrific addition to the series.

Rook (Black Mountain Pack Book 2) by Miranda Lynn

Blurb:
Rook heads to South America and finds his hands full with bringing the Pride out of the dark ages that Tomas had kept it in for years under his malicious ruling. He reunites with a few old friends and discovers a dark and twisted world he never knew existed behind the closed doors of the Alpha’s house. With the help of old military buddy Jonah he guides the Pride onto the path of a happy and fruitful living.
Fate has other plans when Rook is blindsided with the fact that his true mate had been kept in the clutches of the former Alpha. Locked behind doors and used as an object to be shared rather than respected and revered as all female shifters should be.
Will he be able to cull the evil from the Pride and make it safe enough for Casey to lead without fear? Will he be able to help his mate heal from the hell she has been put through and coax her cat to come out and play?

My review:
Have your read the first book Mack? No? Go read that one first so you will get the full potential of this book. I hadn’t read Mack when I read this book and it left me with questions. I am a bit conflicted about this book. I really liked Rook. He is big and rough and buff and stuff but he is also honorable. One of my problems was Jazz had been tortured for 16 years and after only six months of therapy is ready for a relationship with Rook? Where was Tamara when the other women were being tortured? I liked the romance between Jonah and Tamara and Rook and Jazz and was thrilled by the happy ending I just couldn’t check my brain at the door on this one.

Blurb:
Previously published in the anthology Wild, the paranormal queen of steam and sass pulls out all the stops in this sexy, funny short story from New York Times bestselling author Eve Langlais.

My review:
Who says accountants can’t be sexy? Tiger shifter Broderick may love chasing numbers and hunting down discrepancies but he is also sexy as hell. When he meets Lulu the sexy human manager of the gentleman’s club he has been sent to audit his tiger sits up and begs. Too bad somebody doesn’t want the audit to happen and doesn’t care who they hurt while preventing it. Brody isn’t the only one with secrets and Lulu’s is a doozy. The one constant in his world is his executive assistant Chelsea Houston. She is the only one brave enough to call him on his crap and she makes his world run smoother. Charmed Wolf Wolves of Whiskey Hollow, book 1 By Lia Davis

Charmed Wolf
Wolves of Whiskey Hollow, book 1
By Lia Davis

Blurb:
Power is her greatest weakness, but love could be her salvation.
Dana Hutson is about to make one of the toughest decisions of her life: walking away from her twin and her Pack. But the anger of her late mate’s betrayal burns deep, and her guilt threatens to push her over the edge. Combined with the magic she was born with intensifying to a lethal level, she has no choice but to leave Whiskey Hollow in search of her inner peace. But what she finds could be more than she bargained for.
Cooper Reed will do anything to keep his sister and adopted daughter safe from the demented rogue Alpha of the Bloodrose Creek Pack. That includes killing anyone who threatens his family and going on the run. He is willing to do whatever it takes. He isn’t prepared to find his mate in the midst of the chaos.
When even more secrets and dangers come to light, Dana and Cooper must band together to stop the rogue and his minions before all is lost. But will their bond be enough to harness the power needed to defeat such a foe?

Excerpt:
Pain arched across her skull, piercing every nerve ending. Dana growled, holding her head in her hands. With deep, calming breaths, she gathered the built-up magic that ran in her veins, the power that grew stronger every day.

Dreams of destruction and loss had interrupted her sleep over the last month. With only a few hours of rest a day, she feared the control she tried desperately to maintain would slip. She could kill her brother, then the Pack.

Ross did this to us. Her wolf’s words cut through the hammering ache in her skull.

Ross wasn’t their true mate. The mating had been a political arrangement between his Pack and hers, to merge two small groups of wolves together. The first few years had been good, and she’d actually believed she could grow to love him. She’d trusted him to be the strong Alpha that her father was.

However, when the Alpha power transferred to Ross from her father, everything changed. As Ross’s mate, the Pack magic mixed with the power Dana been born with. The power the witch’s Coven, her great-aunt’s Coven, believed was a gift from the goddess, Diana.

Ross became drunk on the magic and wanted more. He went from a compassionate wolf to a power-hungry, abusive mate. He distorted her Pack, and broke her in ways she wasn’t sure could be fixed.

She’d learned to hide the witch’s power from him, containing it deep within her soul. But that power had only grown, and now, it wanted out.

“You don’t have to go.”

Dana squeezed her eyes shut and willed away the ache in her head and her chest. Her twin brother’s soft plea hurt on so many levels. In all of their hundred years of life, they’d never been separated. Never needed to be. They were linked through a familial bond, as well as psychically.

Since Darin had taken over Whiskey Hollow as the Pack Alpha, his power was now hers. And her agony was his. She couldn’t stay, knowing that she caused him pain and may one day hurt him physically. “Dare, we both know I can’t stay. Our link is too strong, and I’m not sure how much longer I can hold my wolf back from challenging you. She grows more aggressive as the poison inside me grows. A healthy Pack can’t survive with two Alphas.”

“You are not poisoned. I took Ross’s Alpha power when I killed him.” Darin stepped closer, his hand extended to her.

Involuntarily, Dana growled and jerked back. “Don’t touch me!”

He let out a soft sigh and lowered his hand. Disappointment and sadness flowed along the link that bound them as twins. Dana hugged her waist. She wanted nothing more than to embrace her brother and believe that everything would be okay. But she couldn’t.

“Where will you go?”

Dana shrugged. “Not sure. North, maybe.”

Darin shoved his hands into his pockets. “I can call a few Packs and ask if you can stay in their territory.”

She sighed and shook her head. “I’m not going to put any other Pack in jeopardy. I know where the neutral zones are, and I plan to stay within them.”

The truth was, she had a place about twenty miles west of Whiskey Hollow. However, she didn’t want to tell her brother that was where she planned to go. Although, he’d find her anyway. And he would, just to keep tabs on her.

She needed the time to get control of her wolf and the growing power within her.

“Take an enforcer with you.”

Dana whirled on her twin and snarled. “I am not taking anyone with me. I’m not helpless, and I don’t need a fucking babysitter.”

His wolf flashed in his blue eyes, and he curled his upper lip. “I know you don’t need a babysitter, but shit happens.”

She strode to him, placed a hand on the center of his chest, and felt the beating of his heart through the thin cotton T-shirt he wore. Instantly, she calmed. That was Darin’s gift as a charmed one—a shifter with magic in their bloodline. “The time has come where I need to search for my own Pack.”

There, she’d said it. Up until then, she’d let her brother believe that her leaving was temporary, that she’d return. However, she didn’t plan on coming back. “Look. You may be fine with lying to yourself, but I have to face reality. The Alpha blood runs thick in my veins, just as it does in yours. Being mated to Ross only added a shit ton of fuel to the fire.”

She stepped back and turned away from him. The unspoken words lingered between them. Her guilt for mating the former Alpha had further distorted the Pack and left her bitter. Especially after she’d watched the bastard kill her parents. When Darin had killed the asshole and claimed the Pack, Dana was no longer responsible for protecting it against her mate.

Yet, the hurt, the anger, and the power she’d gained from Ross had damaged something inside her. Had broken her on a level she hadn’t thought possible. She feared she’d go rogue, mindless and bloodthirsty.

My review:

When you don’t control your power it controls you. Dana Hutson is finding that out the hard way. It is getting harder for her to control her gifts and she needs to get away before she hurts the ones she loves.  In this first book of what appears to be a great new series Charmed wolf/witch Dana leaves her pack before she harms anyone. She finds her true mate along the way but life has taught her not to trust easily so he will have to work to convince her that he may be just what she needs. Then we have an evil alpha dabbling in dark magic and a darling innocent who just wants a safe place. Add them all together and you have an exciting adventure that will leave you wanting to know what happens next.

Death of a Double Dipper (Stormy Day Mystery #5) by Angela Pepper

Blurb:
A visit to an open house brings Stormy Day into the center of a troubling murder.
The local police aren’t lacking for suspects. The victim, Realtor Michael Sweet, was a bully who made countless enemies over his years in Misty Falls.
The problem for Stormy is that the most likely suspects are friends of hers. A couple of them couldn’t look more guilty if they tried. Helping the police to crack this case may break Stormy’s heart.
Worse, if she trusts the wrong person, Stormy’s heart may have bigger problems. Like getting stabbed a whole bunch of times!

My review:
I LOVE STORMY DAY! Once again there has been a gruesome murder in Misty Falls. Realtor Michael Sweet was an awful person, he was a mean bully and a total pig so good riddance to bad meat but even he didn’t deserve to be stabbed between 23 and 25 times and left for dead. Because of his personality there is an abundance of people happy to see him gone but who did the deed? Despite being determined not to get involved Stormy ends up neck deep in the investigation. Now she just has to pray she finds the killer before they find her. This story has lots of small town charm and lots of good friends. A charming addition to the series.

Sass in the City By Marianne Morea

Sass in the City
By Marianne Morea

Blurb:

“Do you still believe things are meant to be?”
Her eyes found his. “Not so much anymore.”
“I didn’t either, but seeing you here... It can’t be just coincidence.”

Solitary is not an option for a Witch like Lael. Not when your best friend is hell-bent on pulling your love life out of moth balls. But for a seer like Lael, stumbling across someone to help turn up the heat is not an easy find. Not until fate blindsides you head long into the last man you ever expected to see again.

You’re not welcome. For Jet Ellis those words were something he’s had to live with for most of his life. Ever since his future went up in smoke the day he was forced from the magical life he was supposed to have. Why? For being a half-blood shifter.

Ten years have passed since and the two are thrown together in place they never expected to be. Old passions ignite, rekindling a fire than never truly died. But revelations from the past force them passed their own misgivings, when the two are threatened. Lives hang in the balance and they must hold onto each as they face a challenge that will either bring them together forever or destroy them for good.

Author Bio:

I'm a New Yorker, born and bred, and my stories embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, I use my experiences from around the world in all my books. There isn't a place my characters live or travel to that I haven't been myself.

Like most authors, my love affair with the written word started as a child with the books I read. Even today, I love to read almost as much as I love to write. My favorite stories are the ones that bring me to places and introduce me to characters that leave me breathless, allowing me to dream in the world of 'what if?'

From the time I could write my name I've been scribbling stories. So it was no surprise when I earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, I decided to do what I love most full time. Write.

In the meantime I am also a founding member and former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre, and when I'm not 'bichok' (but in a chair hands on keyboard), I'm spending time with my husband and our three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places...for inspiration, of course!
