Defensive Zone (The Dartmouth Cobras #2) by Bianca Sommerland

Blurb:
Silver Delgado has gained control of The Dartmouth Cobras—and lost control of her life.

Hockey might be the family business, but it's never interested Silver. Until her father's health decline thrusts responsibility for the team he owns straight into her hands. Now she has to find a way to get the team more fans, and establish herself as the new owner. Which means standing up to Dean Richter, the general manager and the advisor her father has forced on her. The fact that their 'business relationship' started with her over his lap at his BDSM club shouldn't be too much of a problem. Their hot one night stand meant nothing! But how can she earn his respect when he sees her as submissive? Can they separate work and the lifestyle she's curious to explore?

Balancing her new life away from Hollywood, living among people who see her as the selfish Delgado princess, has her feeling lost and alone until Landon Bower, the Cobras new Goalie slips into her life and becomes her best—and only—friend. The time they spend together makes everything else bearable, but before long his eyes meet hers with more than friendship, reflecting what she feels. Which could ruin everything.

Two Dominant men who see past her pretty mask and the shallow image she portrayed to the flashing cameras. A gentle attack from both sides that she can't hope to block unless she learns how to play.

But she's getting the hang of the game.

Warning: This ebook contains material not suitable for readers under 18. In also contains scenes that some may find objectionable, including BDSM, ménage sex, bondage, anal sex, sex toys, double penetration, edge play, and two Doms that will use any means necessary to earn submission. Author assumes no responsibility for repercussions related to reenacting office scenes, but will take full credit for all pleasure involved.

My review:
This is an erotic romance that like the characters will have you testing boundaries.  Silver Delgado is a gorgeous young woman with serious Daddy issues (as in Daddy is complete and total jerk which we learned in Game Misconduct, Dartmouth Cobras #1).  When her father takes ill he puts Silver in charge of the Dartmouth Cobras hockey team.  Silver, unlike her sister Oriana, knows nothing about hockey.  Silver is going to need a lot of help.  That help comes in the form of two deliciously dominant men, Dean Richter the Cobra’s GM and the Cobra’s new goalie Landon Bower.  These men have issues of their own but they may find that each has something to offer that may make life just a little bit better.
As I said earlier this book, like the first one, will push boundaries and that isn’t a bad thing.  I’ll admit that I skipped over a scene which pushed a hot button for me but it didn’t keep me from really enjoying this book.  Bottom line this is a scorching hot book filled with a good story, smoking hot atheletes, and a whole lot of sex.

Memory Zero (Spook Squad #1) by Keri Arthur

Blurb:

MORTAL RECALL

For Sam Ryan, life began at age fourteen. She has no memory of her parents or her childhood. In a decade of service with the State Police, Sam has exhausted the resources of the force searching for clues to her identity. But all mention of her family seems to have been deliberately wiped off the record. Everything changes the night Sam’s missing partner resurfaces as a vampire . . . and forces her to kill him in self-defense. Now Sam is charged with murder. Suspended from the force, and with no one left to trust, Sam accepts some unexpected help from Gabriel Stern, a shapeshifter who conceals startling secrets.

While investigating the circumstances surrounding her partner’s strange behavior, Sam discovers that Garbriel’s been involved with a dangerous organization that’s planning a war on the human race. More immediate, someone is guarding the truth about Sam’s past—someone who’d rather see her dead than risk her knowing too much. To stay alive, Sam must unravel the threads of her past—and find out not only who she is but what she is.

My review:
This is a re-release of one of the first series I’d read by Keri Arthur.  Memory Zero introduces us to another fantastic world where paranormal creatures are out of the closet and it is up to the SIU to keep them policed.
Life has made State Police Officer Samantha Ryan into one tough lady.  Her life is the job.  When her partner and only friend goes missing she is thrilled when he calls her asking to meet.  She is not so thrilled when he tries to kill her and she is forced to defend herself.  She ends up leaving the State Police and joining the SIU.  She is partnered with shapeshifter Gabriel who helps her hone the instincts she has used to stay alive and in the process discovers she has more gifts than previously thought.
I really like Sam.  Life has handed her crap and she refuses to let it get her down.  She has no memory of her life before the age of fourteen but has turned herself into a heck of a cop.  Kind of like a paranormal Eve Dallas.
Memory Zero is a fast paced adventure and mystery that will keep you guessing and turning pages.

Caged Wolf (Wolves of Willow Bend #2) by Heather Long

Blurb:
Triplets, the Buckley brothers were inseparable until everything went wrong one violent, bloody night. A.J. Buckley, the eldest of the trio, faced a human trial for a brutal murder. Found guilty, he was sentenced to twenty-five to life. Without argument or regret, he accepted the sentence. After six years in prison, A.J.’s conviction is overturned on a technicality and he returns to Willow Bend to face a new Alpha and fresh charges.

Vivian Knox was the only witness to the murder. She refused to testify in the human courtroom and spent a year in prison on contempt charges. Once released, she worked tirelessly to free A.J., finally locating a loophole in the case against him. Satisfied with his freedom, the last thing she expected was to be kidnapped to the back of beyond where another judge demands she testify to what she saw that night. This time, contempt is the least of her problems.

Only four people know exactly what happened that night and none are talking. When pack law threatens Vivian, A.J. must stake his claim, but his wolf might be too damaged to help him…

My review:
Though part of a series this book can be read stand alone.  Caged Wolf is a well written, fast paced , page turner of a story.  This story takes place in the incredibly vivid world of the Wolves of Willow Bend.  AJ is a werewolf who has been forced to restrain his wolf while in a human jail.  Now after six years he is freed with the help of the human woman Vivian.  He can’t get her out of his head or heart.  She has invaded his entire being but she has issues.  Can he and his wolf save her? Can she save him?  Read this terrific story and find out.

Beauty and the Mustache (Knitting in the City #4) by Penny Reid

Blurb:
There are three things you need to know about Ashley Winston: 1) She has six brothers and they all have beards, 2) She is a reader, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Former beauty queen, Ashley Winston’s preferred coping strategy is escapism. She escaped her Tennessee small town, loathsome father, and six brothers eight years ago. Now she escapes life daily via her Amazon kindle one-click addiction. However, when a family tragedy forces her to return home, Ashley can’t escape the notice of Drew Runous— local Game Warden, bear wrestler, philosopher, and everyone’s favorite guy. Drew’s irksome philosophizing in particular makes Ashley want to run for the skyscrapers, especially since he can’t seem to keep his exasperating opinions— or his soulful poetry, steadfast support, and delightful hands— to himself. Pretty soon the girl who wanted nothing more than the escape of the big city finds she’s lost her heart in small town Tennessee.

This is a full-length novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the fourth book in the 'Knitting in the City' series.

My review:
This is a fantastic story.  The only things I didn’t like were the title and the cover.  This book had me manic.  Laughing one moment then almost crying in the next.  I was sighing and screaming and cussing and then laughing again.  This is one well written emotional roller coaster ride.  Even if you haven’t read the others in this series (and you really should) read Beauty and the Mustache (Knitting in the City #4) by Penny Reid.

Blurb:
A man who always sees beneath the surface.

Logan has lived his dream of being an artist for hundreds of years. He’s painted some of the most beautiful women in the world, but none of them compare to Meghan Campbell. When they are paired up to go after the next jewel, resisting her becomes almost impossible, but he knows he must. The witch is hiding something and until he knows what that is, he cannot fully trust her.

A woman who can lure any man.

As a witch with siren abilities, Meg has never had a problem with the opposite sex. That is, until she met Logan. The irritating man seems to be the one person in the world who doesn’t succumb to her spell. Unfortunately, he is the one man she really wants. No matter how hard she tries, he resists her.

As they embark on their quest for the next jewel, tempers flare and passion ignites. But when a new layer of the curse is revealed, they discover their failure could put lives in danger. The two must work together to fight the rising power against them and hope that those who support the Clan survive the fight.

Excerpt:

She heard the sound of feet down the hall and knew her morning solitude was about to
be broken. When Jack slid into the room laughing, she smiled in reaction until she saw his The man brought about too many feelings to count. Dealing with him on half a cup of coffee was just not fair. And of course, he looked amazing. All that messy hair, his bedroom eyes, and the stubble he hadn’t shaved...how was a woman supposed to ignore all that beauty? “Morning, Miss Meghan. How are you this morning?” Jack asked, drawing her attention away He giggled like he always did. “I am not a sir.” She widened her eyes. “But you are the son of Angus, are you not?” She looked up at Logan. “Good morning.” “That’s your opinion,” he mumbled as he headed for the coffee. It was out of character for the artist. He’d always seemed to be in a good mood until the last few days.  “Did you wake Logan?” she asked Jack. “Yes, but I needed to wake him. I had a dream,” he said sounding more like the solemn boy .  “Oh, don’t you know not to let dreams bother you.” “Some of Jack’s dreams are premonitions,” Logan said as he placed his coffee at the head of the table. Where she liked to sit. Bugger. “I understand. But, if they are premonitions, there is nothing we can do about it now.” Meg knew that better than anyone and had paid a steep price. She returned her attention to Jack. “So, Sir Jack, what would you like for breakfast?” Logan, for his part, had prowled over to the sideboard to get himself some food. As she had thought before, he hadn’t been what she would have pegged as a stereotypical artist. He had the look. But, his temperament had been one of well, a normal, every day person. Artists, and she had dealt with more than one in her day, tended to be moody and well, more trouble than they were worth. Meg didn’t like moody men. She liked them to be happy and somewhat needy because that’s how she had earned her living for so long. Still, it was hard to ignore the way he moved, or those long, artist’s fingers as. She could just imagine what he could do with those. Lord, to feel them dance over her flesh— Jack made a sound and he was looking at her strangely. Oh, bugger. The boy could definitely read thoughts from time to time. “What else is on your mind this morning, Jack?” she asked as she sipped on her coffee. He shrugged as he sat down to the table and started to eat his bacon. He chewed for a few seconds, then said, “Did you know that Logan sleeps without any clothes on?” She choked, spewing a bit of her coffee. “Does he indeed?” “Spilling all my secrets, Jack?” Logan asked. “I didn’t know it was a secret. You have to tell me. Besides, Miss Meghan was thinking “Never mind about that, Jack. Get to eating,” she ordered, hoping Logan didn’t notice her

My review:
Logan is the laid back artist except when it comes to lovely witch with siren abilities Meghan Campbell. Meg is an admitted grafter and Logan is conflicted.  He wants her but he doesn’t trust her.  Now it seems that she is integral to his task in undoing the curse, stealing a sapphire that once rested in the blade of Robert the Bruce.  If he isn’t careful she may steal his heart at the same time.
Although this is a standalone story you really should read the first two, Callum and Angus, before reading this as there is a lot that has happened to this point that you will better understand where everybody is coming from.  I like that the author does not feel the need to rehash what happened previously.
Logan is sweet, strong and sexy. Meg is smart, sassy and wickedly talented.  They make an incredible team.  I can’t get enough of  Melissa Schroeder’s Cursed Clan.  Bring on Fletcher!

It's in His Kiss (Lucky Harbor #10) by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:
ONE KISS CAN LAST FOREVER
Becca Thorpe has uprooted her life and escaped to the beach. Now's her chance to get away from city living, throw caution to the ocean winds, and live in the moment. Especially if the moment includes the deliciously sexy surfer she meets shortly after arriving in Lucky Harbor. Something about the dark intensity of Sam's eyes and the thrill she gets at his touch convinces her to stay awhile.

Boatbuilder and investment genius Sam Brody is a self-made man who knows how dangerous it can be to mix business and pleasure. But he can't resist offering Becca a job just to hear her laugh and have her near. Yet when her brother comes to town asking for help, will he tempt her back to her glamorous life in the city? Or do Sam and little Lucky Harbor have a chance to win Becca's heart?

My review:
When a series lasts as long as this one you worry it will become formulaic.  But if the formula works why change it.  This is another winner and why Jill Shalvis is an auto-buy for me. Three hot alpha guys who came through hell together settle down in Lucky Harbor and start a charter business.  The business is doing well and they need help.  Enter sweet, funny, tough girl with secrets of her own.  The chemistry between Becca and Sam is instant and incendiary.  I believe they may be one of Jill Shalvis’s hottest couples yet.  I really dug Becca.  She didn’t let her past stop her from moving on and neither does she let Sam run over her (except in a good way).  She has gotten to a place in her life where she realizes she needs to look out for herself.  Come to Lucky Harbor for escape and really hot guys.

Fair or not, he's not able to date like a regular person. So when his personal assistant retires, Richard knows her pretty replacement, Kate, is strictly off-limits.

None of that prepares her to resist the charming, down-to-earth attorney she's assigned to protect. Determined to treat him like any other body to guard, she struggles to maintain her distance. It's her job to step in front of the bullet with Richard's name on it, nothing more.

When threats against the royal family take a deadly turn and his new assistant foils two attempts on his life, Richard's grateful—and more than a little intrigued. There's more to Kate than meets the eye, but what is she hiding? He'll have to trust her with his life when the danger proves to be closer than either realized…

My review:
Richard Prentiss has been my favorite secondary character and I was thrilled to see he finally got his chance to shine.  This is a truly fun book.  True there are some serious issues that are addressed but the chemistry and banter between Richard and Kate is just fantastic.  I read this in one sitting and am seriously considering sitting down and re-reading it because I enjoyed my time with them so much.  You can read this book separate from the rest of the Going Royal books Some Like it Royal - Going Royal, #1 and Some Like It Scandalous - Going Royal, #2 but In My Humble Opinion you will enjoy this more if you have at least read Some Like It Scandalous - Going Royal, #2.

*** Author's Note: Wildfire is a paranormal mystery with romantic elements. It is not a traditional romance. I hope y'all enjoy the read!***

My review:
Wildfire by Mina Khan is one of those fantastic books that can’t be pigeonholed into just one genre.  It is a  paranormal mystery love story with no sex and cowboys, sheriffs and crazy bad guys and friends.  Because of this it may never see your bookshelf and that would be a shame because this is a heck of a story.  Well written, fast paced, I couldn’t put it down.  This is one book that is worth reading past your bedtime.

Swamp Bones: A Novella (Temperance Brennan #16.5) by Kathy Reichs

Blurb:

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan returns in a chilling eBook original novella from #1 New York Timesbestselling author Kathy Reichs. In the prequel to Reichs’s upcoming thriller Bones Never Lie, Tempe takes a much-needed vacation—but murder follows wherever she goes.

Although a trip to Florida is supposed to be about rest and relaxation, there’s no such thing as a day off for Dr. Temperance Brennan. She has come to visit her friend, a dedicated ornithologist who’s researching the threat that intrusive Burmese pythons pose to indigenous bird species in the Everglades. While sorting through the stomach of an eighteen-foot specimen, they make a disturbing discovery: bones that are unmistakably human. And when Tempe spots the telltale signs of murder by a very different kind of predator, she’s drawn into a case with its roots in the darkest depths of the swamp.

My review:
The opening line “March. Barely spring, yet the unseasonable Florida humidity made me feel like I’d disembarked from my flight into a Rottweiler’s mouth.” sets the tone for the story in a way that I absolutely could picture.   Tempe is thrown into another unusual case while visiting a colleague for a short vacation.  But even on vacation Tempe finds herself ass deep in alligators (couldn’t resist) when she discovers human bones inside the python her friend is doing a necropsy on.
We then get to take a trip through the Everglades and learn about the threat that pythons and Boa’s have become in the swamp.  But intrepid Tempe doesn’t let even snakes and alligators stop her from finding justice for the dead.
This is a quick enjoyable read to tide me over until the release of Bones Never Lie.

Nightfall (Vampire Queen #9.6) by Joey W. Hill, Desiree Holt

Blurb:
Ranch owner Quinn Pedraza has to find someone to run the saloon he won in a bet, but more than that, he needs a woman who can handle his alpha personality…and closet submissive sexual cravings. When vampire Selene Torres arrives on the scene, he gets everything he wants—and learns what he really needs.
Inside Scoop: Quinn’s BDSM journey is not for the faint of heart and includes extreme sexual situations and dubious consent, as well as male/male scenes.

My review:
Wow! Just wow.  You always wonder how smoothly a collaborative effort is going to work even between two authors as talented as Joey W. Hill and Desiree Holt.  These two ladies melded as one mind.
This story takes place in the world of Joey W. Hill’s Vampire Queen series but can be read stand alone.  If you haven’t read this series (and why not?) this might be a good book to start with.  In this world vampires are viscous, sexual, and dominant and sometimes cruel but they sometimes find a connection and are capable of deep emotion though they hesitate to call it love.  In Nightfall we meet a young made vampire,  Selene Torres, who is about to set ranch owner Quinn Pedraza’s world on its ear.  Quinn is a “man’s man”.  Ranch owner, former rodeo rider, and bar owner Quinn doesn’t have much time for a life outside of work and taking care of those he considers in his care.  That too is about to change.
This is a hard book there are moments of cruelty that make you want to cry followed by acts of love that make you want to shout with joy.  This is not a safe book you will be drawn in and made to feel and sometimes you will be out of your comfort zone but it will make you think and I think make the story that much better.

Last Ascension (The Capes #3) by Rebecca Royce

Blurb:

Together, they will discover the truth is more heinous than either of them could have imagined and that they will have to face the truth of their pasts if they're ever to have a future.
My review:
Fantastic ending to this terrific series.  This book can be read stand alone as the author gives you enough of the back story that you don’t feel lost nor are you bored out of your mind if you have read the other two.
Lael is the little brother.  He has two very overprotective brothers who make it hard for him to get past his mistakes. Out on his own he finds a young woman with no memories who may be his salvation or his downfall and that of his brothers.  Can Lael get past his past and find a future where he can redeem himself and find a future with or without his brothers.
I absolutely fell in love with Lael.  Having read the other books I got to see him grow into a fantastic young hero.  I applaud the choices he made and will add this book to my re-read over and over again stack.

Cyra's Cyclopes (Love's Immortal Pantheon #3.5) by Tilly Greene

Blurb:
Love is complicated and can happen in the most unlikely places.

Cyclopes are giants, mean and set in their ways. Agres, Steropes and Brontes are no exception. They have existed forever and see no reason to change. They're comfortable working with the immortals and keeping the pesky mortals at a distance through fear. One night, they meet the stunning Cyra and everything as they know it has been altered. They flounder for solid footing and eventually find level ground where the brothers are content having a lover in their lives. All is going well until they discover their lover is going to leave them for the deity of agriculture she is devoted to serving. Working through the rare feelings of fear, they finally grasp what they never thought would happen to them, actually happened. They are in love, deeply and wholeheartedly, with Cyra. Desperate not to lose her, the normally self-assured trio bands together and are ready to fight for her love.

Having spent most of her life dedicated to a god in grateful servitude, Cyra is surprised when love blooms in her heart for another. Not just for one man, but three brothers, an unheard of scenario even on the sexually permissive Mount Olympus. They were Cyclopes, one of the most feared beings to exist, except they were perfect, handsome, one eyed men who were gentle giants when with her. The love she felt for them grew until she thought her heart would explode and while their bodies told her they cared, the brothers never said a word about how they felt for her. The spring festival brought the point in time when she had to choose between the men who held her heart and the one she served. While it wasn’t going to be easy, all that was left for her to do was decide in which direction was best for her to go.

My review:
Ignore the cover.  A  Cyclops only has one eye so the guys on the cover aren’t Cyclopes.
Cyra's Cyclopes is a well written erotic multi partner romance without the squick factor you might imagine with having Cyclopes as the love interests. (The plural form of Cyclops is Cyclopes.) This story takes place in a time rarely written about these days.  Ms. Greene pulls no punches when she describes what it was like to live, love and worship in ancient Greece.  I’ve not read the others in this series but this book can be read stand alone.  If you want a really original, truly hot, tale of love and lust try this one.

Whatcha Gonna Do With a Cowboy: A Deputy Laney Briggs Novella by Jodi Linton

Blurb:

Some cowboys are worth getting dirty for.

In her latest adventure, sassy Deputy Laney Briggs discovers the local high school football coach passed out under the stadium bleachers wearing nothing but a smile…and his wife’s lingerie.

Things really start to get wild when she runs into the smoking hot Federal Marshal, Colt Larsen, snooping around the Granger’s house. The Marshal is on the hunt for the coach’s wife, who is nowhere to be found. Laney and Colt set out to find her, and quicker than a cold snap comes and goes in Texas, Laney finds herself  up to her eyeballs in a case involving death threats, a ruthless motor cycle gang, a Mexican drug cartel, a kidnapping, and a shoot-out to rival the O.K. Corral.

In over their heads, Laney calls in the big guns—her very own Texas Ranger, Gunner Wilson. But with the stakes higher than ever, will Gunner’s help be enough for Laney to get out of this case alive?

My review:
Jodi Linton does it again and steps it up a notch.  Laney and Gunnar are back and things are heating up in Pistol Rock.  Whatcha Gonna Do With a Cowboy is a delightful romp in a quirky small town with wonderful characters and a terrific mystery.  Good looking cowboys and sassy women this is a great escape.
